Thank god you didn't flash that S2 rom.

Siyah is probably the most stable kernel, you can't really go wrong with it, alot of them are just refined versions of Siyah, I'm sticking with the CF one at the minute as CM10 is very new, I used DarkNight before which was good.

You not jumping to CM10/Jellybean?

Battery life lasts me all day now too, which, as daft as it sounds, is the phone's new best feature. Criskelo5.3 rom, with Phenominal2.0 kernel, really happy with this one, will stick with it...

Found a really nice Launcher SJ. It's called Holo Launcher and it's basically Google stock but with all the gestures, icon changing and cool stuff on the others. There's 2, 1 is JB only, the other is GB, ICS etc.

Wasn't too into custom launchers as I like the stock look but this 1 is awesome. Available on Playstore or Apkmania.

Simple Andriod phone suggestion

Post by thebears »

Please can anyone suggest a straightforward Android phone for use as a mobile, e-mail and Whatsapp, that I can buy in Hua Hin?

Frankly I dislike mobile mobiles but I need to get more up-to-date. I require Whatsapp to be on the phone from scratch. Preferably it needs to be pocket-sized.

I like the look at the Sony Xperia Tipo just released in UK for 90 on a PAYG basis. Does anyone know, is this available in Thailand, and more specifically, in Hua Hin?

Also, can a QWERTY keyboard format be used on Android phones?

You could have a look at the Samsung Galaxy Mini that Buksida bought, he was pleased with it and I think it was under 5000b, you can't really go wrong with the Samsungs at any price range.

Touchscreen Androids use on screen Qwertys.

None will come with Whatsapp but it will take you 30 seconds to install it from the market.

Some of the best *rooted* battery saving advice I've seen in a single post, so thought it worth sharing. Posted by someone called 'simes660' on one of the Android forums, so I assume np to replicate here!? Since rooting (inspirational credit Rootmaster-Baa) I'd say very crudely that my battery life has at least f'kin doubled. An uncrude estimate would be that it has at least doubled.
1. Don't use a rom below 2.3.4. (2.3.3 battery life was dire). most custom roms have all the sammy bloatware removed, so a custom rom is def the way to go. i've only ever tried villainrom and checkrom v4, and checkrom is def the way to go.

2. Juice defender app. works for some, not others. works for me

3. Keep screen brightness down as much as you can. i keep mine at around 20%, not *too* dark, but still nice.

4. Don't use bright wallpaper, icons etc (ie, lots of white). dark is more sexy anyroads. live wallpaper can be a battery crusher too, although the less complex ones (numerous ICS clones) can be less draining.

5. Turn off data/wifi when not in use. either install jkay settings to set a data toggle on your notifications screen, or install an app like extended controls to set a data toggle widget. if you need to keep data on, and are in a 2G network area only, in mobile network settings>network mode, set it to GSM only.

6. Install 'betterbatterystats' to see what's going on in the background. it'll highlight what apps, services are consuming battery, wakelocks etc.

7. Install titanium backup to freeze apps that suck resources. if you're on a stock rom, this is a must, not so much for a custom rom as a lot of the offending bloatware has been removed.

8. Flash a decent kernel. Siyah always works for me, and just keeps getting better and better with every new version.

9. Install 3g watchdog pro. This will show you what apps are consuming the most data, and in turn, usually hinder battery life. i installed the sky news app and didn't realise it was set to check news in the background every hour, by default. it ate battery and data until watchdog pro detected it.

10. Keep widgets to a minimum. only use ones you *really* need. if you have social network, news, or weather widgets, they normally consume a lot of battery due to being constantly updated. if you do *need* them, adjust the update interval to something less aggressive.

I did take a quick look at this when u posted it but couldn't really see much different between it and the excellent Apex (and it's near twin Nova).

But I only took a few steps to be honest as didn't wanna risk messing up me Apex set-up I've spent couple months working up.

My Battery is terrible on CM10 Jellybean, BUT it does say in big red warning letters that it's an experimental Rom and not to cry and moan. Samsungs update is out in Q4 so things should improve when Cyanogenmod get their hands on Sammys code.

What Rom you on now SJ? Can't fault CM10 bar the battery life.

Don't know if it's been mentioned here but, for those who's wives/girlfriends have an android phone, I came across an app called 'TV Thailand'. It's basically a front for a load of Thai TV YouTube channels, but it's pretty comprehensive and put one of (ONE of) the biggest smiles I've ever seen on my girlfriend's face!

This Criskelo one, with Phenominal kernel. This 'kitchen' thing was like an update of his original one, but with this during the flashing in CWM you get to choose what kernel out of about 6, what modem, themes, icons, apps to include, various settings to be included in the actual rom. Blinding really. I went back into it and re-flashed several kernels until I got one that got my back to where the benchmark were at.
What is eating the battery % then, I did have a security app that was killing it, plus me son's games mostly NEVER stop running after u close them. BUT you don't see this in the 'RUNNING' stats, they don't appear there, u only see them by opening the apps individually in APPLICATION MANAGER - DOWNLOADED. I'm sure you know that already mind.

Is there anything that eats it while mostly on standby, that's usually an easy way to spot something. Under a long period on standby (with a little bit of other use) you should only see 'Cell Standby' and 'Screen' way out their hogging the use like maybe 35% & 35%, with the rest 10% or less each. At least that's how it is on this rom.
