Ok...a couple of quickies.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

I only just got round to watching this, and it was well worth the watch. Though the flick does suffer from a few faults including a painfully slow start, the Lisbeth character being a cardboard cutout Otaku which tries too hard to be what it is, the crime investigation being second place to overdone characterisation and the interplay between the two leads, and the shitey levels mix of the soundtrack where some dialogue is all but unintelligable thanks to the overburdening background music its still a good yarn. After the slow as hell first half hour it does pick up and hook you in...BUT what it did do is make me drop the original version as Im guessing its better done. At VeeHD you will also find the other two flicks in original form with English subs.

well worth dropping and watching.

Oh....and I loved the opening credits.....the cover of the Led Zep song The Immigrant Song by Trent Reznor and Karen O rocks....took me back to happy nights down at Bound And Gagged watching City bankers in nappies gettin thrashed senseless by leatherclad dominatrixes.

KILL BILL - THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR

When Quentin first made this grand homage it was 4hrs long, and after a screening at Cannes the studio made him split it into the two halves we all saw. The US and EU versions also cut some of the scenes, and changed others for some inexplicable reason (like the bits of the Crazy 88 grand slam fight beng in black and white for no apparent reason....seems it was those that suffered the cuts and so Q got hisown back by making it obvious).

Anyways....this version is the original Cannes version with all the cut scenes restored and an old 50s style "Intermission" bit where the two joined up. In effect this is now the full on splat happy Japanese release versions now linked back together. Its well worth it if you are a fan of the films, but for the casual veiwer the changes are cosmetic at best...theres about 10 minutes of restored footage spread across several segments, an odd shot here and there, and one fully restored scene that was cut out of the US and EU versions.

One other drawback is finding a version under 1G isnt easy...theres one at VeeHD but I dropped a higher rez MKV version from a Turkish board. I prefer this version....its good to have it back as it should be.

another quickie

DRIVE

The best way of describing this would be a retake on the Luc Besson classic masterwork LEON.

A loner misfit emotionally sparse Hollywood stunt car driver whose boss is in deep debt to local mafia figures finds himself falling for his young single mother next door neighbour. To make ends meet he also works as a driver for crims on the sly. Unfortunately the neighbour's husband gets released from prison and the day after his release the same gang make him take on a robbery to pay off his debts or hs wife and kid get the chop. So the stuntman agrees to drive for him, only to find that the job is a set up that goes badly wrong. Unfortunately for the men who set the job up our driver happens to be somewhat sociopathic, caring only about the woman and kid who represent the hearth and home he will never have......and so bloody revenge is now his only recourse....

Its a good film....really good in fact. The plot is complex and multi layered and soon becomes a "who is stabbing who in the back??" twister. Has a nice sort of indie INCEPTION / THINGS TO DO IN DENVER WHEN YOU'RE DEAD feel about it and uses the "flash action" sudden violence scenes to their best effect. Well worth a watch IMHO.

Have you seen Chronicle yet SM? DVD rips are out and I've got it for tonight. It looks like it's got elements of Akira to it.

And the Drive soundtrack is awesome, it reminds me of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

you know me....give me a flick where the bad guys are Nazis and its mothers milk. The Nazis were bad with style, and thanks to the more batsh*t crazy wing of Thule/Vril Society and the Black Sun alchemy and swastikas lot theres plenty of fertile ground for sci-fi/horror 4th Reich flicks and Indy Jones bandwagons. Make em zombie Nazis and its direct onto the hard drive vault. Well, no surprises where this ended up.....

OUTPOST : BLACK SUN

This is the sequel to the excellent mercenaries vs zombies flick OUTPOST, and like the cursable HOSTEL franchise uses the second film to fill in some of the background as to what the scientist character in the first film was looking for, and who he was actually employed by.....yep.....the dumb shmo was actually (unknowingly) working for a bunch of 4th Reichers called the Black Sun, who it turns out plan to unleash an army of undead stormtroopers on a war torn Europe post the collapse of Yugoslavia.

The second flick thus follows a young Nazi hunter who is tracking down members of the shadow group who killed her father when he uncovered the plot, and another scientist who knew the first one and wants the technology so he can sell it to the highest bidder....and a pack of NATO troops that are unwittingly also the pawns of the Black Sun mastermind sent in to shut the phase shift device down and recover it.

Its a great second outing for the franchise IMHO, even if the small budget means that some of the effects are distinctly sci-fi channel CGI level stuff. There are more zombies though, some new bad guys thrown in, and some excellent jump out of your seat bits. Well worth a drop and watch...but bear in mind Im biased as hell when it comes to this genre. Yes it gets a bit hammy in places, but what the hell.....Zombie Nazis rock!

Out and about in BDRIP formats all over the shop.

for some reason all the YouTube trailers are of a German dubbed version....dont worry...the versions online are all Englsh

theres a couple of more Nzi zombs flicks due out this year, as well as Iron Sky with its wry black humor space Nazis, so it looks to be a good year for Sandy

Also, another flick with a similar name that is due out this year is OUTPOST 11..... a steampunk version of the Thing with a team of post WW1 alternatve timeline troops at an Arctic base falling fould of cabin fever....getting some good press so will be well worth keeping an eye out for this

THE HUNTER

Willem Dafoe plays a loner mercenary hunter employed by a shady international biotech company to chase down reports that a Tasmanian Tiger, thought long extinct, is runnng about wild in the bleak wilderness of the Tasmanian Highlands. The local contact lodges him with a hippy family whose father went missing in the same area a year before, and as the hunter gets closer to his prey he also starts to work out that not is all as it seems, and the motives of the company are not what he was made to understand at the outset.

Its a slow burning thriller and set is some beautiful wild spaces, and though it is slow does get you hooked by the half way mark, even though its pretty obvious from the outset that something isnt right about Willem's mission and employers.

Well worth dropping and watching IMHO, and out and about in crisp DVDRIPs all over the place.

After watching it (in slackjawed horror for most of the time) and Id recc you try and catch it either there or on download, as it made the whole stupid greedy shell game a whole lot clearer.
Certainly does. Confirms what critics have attested to. The mighty U.S. economy is controlled by a parasitic class of crooks and thieves, who have captured or neutralized regulatory bodies, ratings agencies and the political process, rigged the markets and are busily looting the country. Pity the film didn't cover other aspects of government. IMO they would find them just as corrupt.

Narrated by Matt Damon you can also watch it in HD here...
