Probably, there are a few free downloads, usually of older or promotional material but most are due royalties or are copyrighted.richard wrote:Are we using illegal sites to download our music and movies?

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Please rephrase to "Am I using illegal etc etc". Do not, repeat NOT ask "Are we".richard wrote:Are we using illegal sites to download our music and movies?

Re: Using illegal websites to download movies and music
gotta say that story has me surprised....surprsed that an agency like SOCA is the blunt hammer the govt use. What ever happened to FACT? I guess SOCA must have a shortage of real work to be doing...you know on all those real crims.
Im just glad its not MY tax money they are wasting. So...next time you read about drugs related volence rocketing up just remember to send the govt a nice thankyou note for making sure SOCA track down those massive dangers to the state 16 year old copyright infringers.
In answer to the OP....well obviously yes. Unless you download stuff directly from the legtmate source or a legit redistributor then yes the download is in all likelyhood illegal.
Thing is...ask me now whether I give a flying f**k! When I see a member of Metallica out on the street begging for change I may listen to their cries that downloading ther stuff is serious crime. As long as they, ther agents, and the company execs of the labels drive round in flash cars and have swimming pools bigger than my house I will file ther cries and whines in the bullshit box where they belong. As long as Johnny Depp can charge 25 mil per film the cries of foul play will always echo as cackola of the highest mark.
Here is a tip to the industry boys....when you are bleatng on about how llegal downloads are killing off the film and music indiustry...try using spokespeople who DONT drive a Lexus or Aston Martin and DONT own whole frickin islands in the Caribbean.
As for SOCA...well....your taxes pay em.

How hypocritical, considering what you get paid for...

Re: Using illegal websites to download movies and music
One of the aspects of illegal downloading that concerns me is that of literature in the form of ebooks. The problem there is that an author has really no other way of making an income from their art apart from selling books and if you take that away you will have no more professional authors and consequently very few decent books. If you reduce the cost of everything to nothing, then that is what you will end up with, worthless literature.
A musician can still make money from performing and people will still pay to go to the movies for the experience but an author will be left with nothing.

If they are downloading in order to print out the book, can't you make the price of the e-book less than the cost of printing it out?STEVE G wrote:One of the aspects of illegal downloading that concerns me is that of literature in the form of ebooks.

And I suspect that tax is the bottom line - the amount of revenue being lost to the exchequer. We all know there are all sorts of tax cons, but the Govt. has pledged to pursue them wherever and however.sandman67 wrote:As for SOCA...well....your taxes pay em.
Just look at Glasgow Rangers, just look what happened to the train robbers. HMG does not take kindly to what its due being taken from them, especially in tough times.

In Thailand it is illegal to use software to circumvent government web filters so we have had to remove several posts from this thread and lock it to prevent further discussion as we do not want to give the authorities an excuse to target this forum and shut it down.
