Walk into a shop with passport and money, walk out with a scooter. If you have no address the shop will register it to their shop. No licence ? no problem
Re: buying new scooter
I had the impression that new vehicles came with red plates used only within certain times and district, with the official plate coming later.

Re: buying new scooter
I bought a Honda PCX over a year ago and have been very happy with it - it rides much better than say a Honda Wave and is definitely more comfortable, although still not great for anything more than local running around. We put the bike in my Thai wife's name which like so many things here, makes it a lot simpler.
Take one for a test ride and I am sure you will be impressed, although of course they cost a lot more than a Wave.

Re: buying new scooter
it takes a hour or so to get all the paper work done and then a month to get your plate ,they issue red plates until then, the nouvo is a very good bike ,i cant justify the extra 25000 baht for the pcx,if you have not rode a nouvo before rent one ,you wont be disapointed
Re: buying new scooter
I prefer the Nouvo to the other scooters I've tried. Only drawback is it's weight. Putting the bike on it's centerstand requires technique, I can't just muscle it. Sometimes I have to lift the rear of the bike by the handle at the back end of the seat to get out of a jammed up parking mess. Each time it makes me wonder if that's going to be the source of my next back injury.
Re: buying new scooter
I have a pcx, a honda click, had a yamaha mio, and have riden several others including the wave and fino, the pcx kills all of them, has more room more under the seat, is smother faster. gets 50 k's to a litre [pfi]. Have not had a go on the nouvo yet so can't comment, but they are 135 cc not 125 like the pcx, so maybe a bit faster of the blocks. There are also mods available for the pcx big bore kit, and tuneable ecu, getting you 20% more power, and it wipes out the speed limiter [104 k's an hour] hope that helps, oh and there 71k new and first service free.

Best be advised to check all ''regulations''....... judging from the sign below, several HH Forum members could be ineligible to ride a scooter!!

Could be a provincial decision. Chonburi and Rayong have MC red plates. Pete

Re: buying new scooter
we definately got red plates with ours a new wave and im pretty sure if you drive around town all the new bikes have red plates ,ive bought a few in my time, only ones with out plates are the 50 cc scooters because you dont need a licence to drive one.and they can also be rode at a younger age
but not sure exact age,

Re: buying new scooter
Yes, think it might be a provincial/local government decision as I've seen red plates from Pattaya about in Isaan but have never seen local red plates issued from the northeast in Korat/Khon Kaen/Buri Ram/Udon Thani etc on motorbikes, people just ride around with no plates till the get the real ones a couple of weeks later.
Probably an area provincial thing, not national, unless it's supposed to be like that on a national level, but the enforcement factor is lacking which wouldn't be a surprise to most.
However, I'll say that, in general, you shouldn't expect red plates with motorbikes.
Depends where you are I guess if what is said on this thread is to be believed......ambiguous, as always folks.
Just go with the local flow so-to-speak....is probably the best answer.

Edit - Little bit added to line 1-2 for clarity and to reduce ambiguity
