good news for fans of neo-jidai samurai epics.....
Takashi Miike, the man who recently remade the samurai classic 13 ASSASSINS, has now turned his attention to another classic black n white samurai revenger saga HARA-KIRI. Hopefully it will be up to the masterful level of his 13 Assassins remake, and being a major fan of all things samurai film my hopes are up. Its released in Japan at the end of this month, so should be online shortly after.
The original is a RASHOMON style "onion skin" film...as the layers of story peel away what at first seems a relatively simple plot becomes ever more twisted and complex, until the final dramatic end act. Like the original, and the recent 13 Assassins, these films use a slow burn build up, contrasting the staid and rule ridden system of Bushido with the all too human men who try to live by the code, and that makes the inevtable explosve action filled end act all the more dynamic. And oooohhhh yes....there will be blood......
The trailer looks lovely....
"Science flew men to the moon. Religion flew men into buildings."
Sam Jackson makes some odd stuff....one film you get a Pulp Fiction or 51st State, the next you get a Snakes On A Plane. This one hovers dangerously close to the latter.
Sam runs a hghly illegal onlne gameshow where real gladiatorial combat takes place, the bad bit being its real, and the combatants are all kidnapped and forced to fight. When his underlng picks up a firefighter who has recently lost his wife, who then turns out to be a real full on killer, things get interesting.
Even with the end act twist in the plot this just seems an excuse for Spartacus style CG heavy fight scenes sans the soap opera plot to support it.
Cant say its heavily reccd, but fills a space on a night of bad TV. Not a keeper, maybe a watcher

A recent release care of the master of Chinese Wu Xia cinema Donnie Yen and one well worth downloading
SWORDSMEN (Wu Xia)
Set in the early 1900s Donnie plays a humble paper maker in a backwater villiage in rural China who whilst making a delivery to the villiage store prevents a robbery by two bandits....unfortunately killing both in the process. After the police investgate all seems done...a simple case of self defence and a local hero. But one young police officer notices some inconsistencies in the crime scene, and suspects Donnie is not who he claims to be. As he investigates further the story unravels, and Donnie may just be the man he has been hunting for the last 10 years....a full on heartless serial killer assassin who turned a family of butchers into pork buns and sold them to the surrounding towns.
This martial arts epic combines traditional wire fu wu xia madness with a Rashomon style multi layered plot weave and "CSI" style forensic replays and flashbacks....utterly great cinema is the result. Top class actng from the leads, excellent slo mo fight scenes, and a crackng plot seal the deal.
A full on wire fu whodunnit classic and a solid gold three cheers keeper.
Out at all the usual places = at veehd there is a copy wth english subs hard coded onto the film, elsewhere are copies with excellent separate subs files.

Bill Nighey and Rachel Wiesz star in this made for TV movie care of the BBC about the difficulties the UK Security Services (MI5) have working in this modern world of asymmetrical warfare, global terrorism and information overload.
Bill plays an old school network MI5 intelligence analyst whose boss, played by Michael Gambon, lands a rather uncomfortable file on his desk one day. The file contains hard evidence of the CIAs dirty little secret black prisons and torture network, and more to the point hard proof that the UK PM has been complicit and has hidden intelligence that could have prevented terror attacks in the UK in order to forward his personal polce state agenda and drive for a UK version of the US DHD. Crap...fan....splat! At the same time lonely old Bill meets his next door neighbour, a charming and attractve young lass whose brother was shot by the Israeli DF at a protest and whose death was then subjected to a whitewash and denial by the same PM. Bill, already as popular at work as a poodle poo in a swimming pool, is definitely havng one of those days.......Is he being used? Is he being framed for an intell leak? The plot gets ever thicker.....
Its not bad, but t could be so much better, as it takes till the last half hour before what is going on becomes clear in any way, and it is only then you get engaged. The first hour is just one plot string after another, none of which appear to go anywhere. Theres a stellar cast, so the acting is spot on, but it just takes way too long for stuff to make any form of sense, and so you get bored waiting for the connections. It could so easily have been a SYRIANA but thanks to a thin script its more of a British Rail tuna sandwich.....soggy, stodgy and a bit thin on flavour...but fills up a gap.
Its worth a watch, but I junked it afterwards. Out on all the usual sources in DVDRP formats.
WARNING - A year ago PPVRIP copies of films were pretty good high quality and well worth downloading. Now it seems the CAM scene crowd have got in on the act and PPVRIP copies are piss poor snowy blurry lo rez messes ..... Id recc avoiding them and wating for DVDRIPs to come out.
"Science flew men to the moon. Religion flew men into buildings."
Not sure how old this is and has probably been done here already.
Russel Crowe plays a husband in a battle to get his wife out of jail after she is convicted of murder. I won't say anymore as it will spoil the film.
Another thank you goes to Sandman from me. Couldn't think of anything to download so had a scan back through this thread to see what I've missed. Got 5 on the go now - Red State, Blitz, Captain America, Narnia 3 and (not sure if this ones been reviewed yet) Ricky Gervais' The Invention of Lying.
One of my all time favorite films is BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF (aka La Pacte des Loupes). For me its the perfect storm....costume drama set in Enlightenment France, a werewolf yarn, lovely complex multi layered plot, lush visuals and beautifully scored and filmed, great characters, some top class wire fu bashing and biffing....utter class. I defnitely recc you grab a copy, preferably the full length French language version Directors Cut with the extras DVD which has a fascinating documentary about the real historical Beast of Gevurdan that inspired the film.
Anyways, last year the semi-Frenchies out in Quebec made another same period werewolf thriller called HAIR OF THE BEAST, and whilst its nowhere near as big budget and lush as Brotherhood its still well worth checking out.
Jospeph Cote escapes jail and the hangmans noose, only to find he is now a wanted man. So he assumes the identtiy of a priest he finds dead in a gutter. Unfortunately the priest is a famous werewolf hunter and the place hes chosen to hide out is plagued by werewolves.....
Its well worth a watch IMHO....and is out on the net in DVDRIPS and at veehd.
"Science flew men to the moon. Religion flew men into buildings."
Talking of favorite films LEON is another....especially the longer Directors Cut version which has more characterisation in it. Anyways, Luc Besson has made another assassin revenger film.... COLUMBIANA that plays with the same themes.
The skinny and sexy Zoe Saldana plays Cataleya, a little girl whose father just happens to be the main button man for a bunchof very nasty Columbian drug dealers. When he retires the boss retires him and his wife, unfortunately missing Cataleya who does a bunk. She grows up with her US based uncle who is also a bad lad, and he teaches her the tircks of the trade. 15 years later Cataleya goes on a blood, guts and body strewn trail of revenge, leaving behind her fathers calling card. She is after the drug lord, the FBI are after her, and the drug lord and his lads are in deep with the CIA.....cue all hell breaking loose.
Its well done, and full of sneaky break in and kill sequences lke Luc's earlier LEON, but at the end of the day its no LEON....its more of a very well done but very by the book assassin thriller....no twists and turns just the usual slow progression towards the inevitable end big badda boom fight.
Its well worth a watch, but a keeper it aint in these days of limted storage space and a schedule full of potential keepers on the horizon.
Out and about n lovely crisp DVDRIP formats at all the usual places.
Despite the hype REAL STEEL is nothing except the usual cliched lost kid and proxy dad yarn wrapped around Rocky meets Rock N Sock Em Robots. Forks in the leg is more fun. Out and about in crappy blurryvision TS format. Dont say you werent warned.
"Science flew men to the moon. Religion flew men into buildings."
CAPTAIN AMERICA is out now in DVDRIP format, but only so far in the 1.4G "2 700mb CD" format.
Wait a few days and some kind soul wll have applied the shrinko spray and reduced it down to a more friendly 700MB version .... hopefully.
In a couple of weeks the disks round town should be using the new crisp version as well.
However, if like me you dont mnd Matroska (MKV) versions of films (you need to convert em to AVI if you want to burn em to a dvdplayer watchable dvd) you can find a lovely crisp 500mb version with Mediafire down links at mkvmoviez4u.blogspot.com. GOM and VLC media players play MKV files, so you could always link your pc to your tv and play the file from your pc.
