I've been mucking about with PC lately doing back-up's, running Malware checks, CCleaner cleans/registry fixes,

FF won't affect help files for other applications, its probably something you've enabled in CCleaner. I don't use it so cant specify what.

Yes, no doubt that's what has caused it. Funny thing is I just tried to open CCleaner's online help and it won't open that either lol.

It's doing it for updates too, won't access their website but opens their info on a Word doc. Tried it with security suite off and same same. Still, it's no big hassle really.

My daughter's computer (in the U.S.) has a problem so I've been trying to help her over the phone. I've been running Malwarebytes once a month ever since Buksi mentioned it on here and my understanding was that it fixes any infections it finds.

So... the first thing I did was have her download and install Malwarebytes from cnet.com and run a full scan. It came back and said it found two infections. In the log she says it says "two infections found" and "no action taken". I've never gotten to this point and seen these screens because my computer has never been infected.

Why didn't Malwarebytes remove the 2 infections automatically or is there something she needs to do to make it remove or fix them? I told her to look for any button that says fix or remove infections and she said none existed.

It usually places them in quarantine automatically and if preferred you can then delete permanently :

"Quarantine
The quarantine tab holds all potential threats found on the system. It provides the user the option to delete these items and also the flexibility to restore a legitimate item from the quarantine. If you are unsure about a particular threat, be sure to do a search on the Internet for more information or visit our online community to learn more about it."

^ Got it. Found my answer on the malwarebytes user forum...

Here's what the forum said:

Run the Malwarebytes scan again and:

* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

Does that sound right? Also when I ran malwarebytes on my machine so I could see the screens and tell her what to do I got a message that said the infection file needed updating. When I clicked ok to update it, I got

An error has occurred. Please report this error code to our support
team.

PROGRAM_ERROR_UPDATING (11001, 0, Host not found)

No such host is known.

Funny enough after she downloaded and executed the program she got the same message about update needed and when she tried it she got the very same error message. The malwarebytes forum has many members reporting that same message starting earlier this month with no solution. Anyone else getting this message. The program will still run but it may not find everything as the virus files are not current.

The problem she's trying to fix may not be from the viruses (though she needs to get rid of them first). Has this happened to anyone else.

She is running Windows7 on a Samsung Laptop and yesterday when she booted up all her desktop icons and wallpaper were gone. The task bar is still there and she can still do everything through the start and programs menu but she had a lot of icons on the desktop and a custom wallpaper and she wants it all back. I told her she may have to recreate it manually, but it disappeared for some reason.

Is there a way in Windows7 to recover a lost desktop?

I've not used it for some months but now it's just updated OK after automatically downloading and installing the latest version (ver,1.51.0.1200 dated May 29).

She could try 'System Restore' in the Control Panel; that seems to be a pretty comprehensive cure-all. It restores all settings to what they were at any given previous time.

Have seen this a couple of times and it could be a number of things from a corrupt user profile to simply having turned the desktop icons off, here are a few things to try:

She could try starting up in safe mode command prompt

Then typing in MSCONFIG.CHKDSK/R/F

Then SFC/SCANNOW

Thanks guys, I'll talk to her tomorrow and have her try those suggestions. Now I know what telephone IT support people feel like trying to debug a remote problem with only questions and answers... ... it's so frustrating not to be able to get your hands on the machine itself to figure it out! It's like playing a game of 20 questions (with many more than 20).

I was looking for a link to the Comodo Firewall download and CNET and others have a download but only for XP/Vista.

Does anyone have a link for this firewall for Windows 7? Or is there a simple answer that I'm missing?
