I came to Hua Hin for the first time during Christmas 2008 festivities with my wife who is from Thailand.
During my hangover after a party I was searching the web and found land for sale. We bought it about 10km outside the town. Still haven't built our dream home there but hope to one day when we retire as we love the area and visit all the time!

arrived from usa in 2000. moved into townhouse in sport villa with business partner and friend larry. at that time sv was thought to be on outskirts of town. the bar area was smaller then but so was expat community. i had a truck and used to go drinking and womenizing 4-5 times a week. in those days i would park in temple as close to bidaban as i could get. usually right next gateway going to bars. in otherwords there were no cars or trucks parked there at nite. ever. nobody drove then expect for motorbikes and then not a hell of alot even did that. you could have shot an arrow from say THE SHIP, mags and billy's bar, as far as you could in any direction and covered 80% of places where expats were living. if they couldn't walk to it then forgetaboutit. this made for a nice tight expat community and most of us knew each other or at the least by 1 degree of separation. it always suprised me as to now little the expats knew about anything outside of town center. it was a grand life for them. for me it sucked because there was nothing to do besides drink and screw. most folks back then were content to relax and shoot the shit, drink ,eat and sleep. the bar girls were also a tight knit group and seened to have as much fun as guys in the bars. they were all friends and we joked that they had a book on each local expat reguarding size, staying power, if you had any problems with.... once i took 14 of them in my truck to panbrarea[beach area know as skull mountain]. we all squeezed in and bought kfc[panbraree had only 1] chips, soda and beer. the girls paid. they were so happy to get out of town[some had not left since they arrived]. some of the best looking bar girls were there and it was a blast. you could b'bque yourself drinking for under a 1,000. i did this 1-2 times a week on a search and find misson. looking :banghead: for the finest b/g in as many bars as i could stagger to[10to15] with 1 drink per. go back next nite sober take b/g,if she was there and 8 out of 10 times they were and off we went to sports. hua hin was great for about 6 months then i ran out of gas and the walls started moving in. i can tell you 1 thing with absolute certainty, no one thought the town would become what it has otherwise we would have all saved, borrowed ,begged or stold $ to by land dirt cheap.

Late '94 while working on HK airport, was too quiet as it was a lads trip so went to Pattaya for first time and had a blast obviously. Then all regular trips were to Patts, Phuket or Samui, until met wife in '99 then had to start having normal holidays :( , so visited friend in HH again in 2001 I think, then moved here from UK in 2004.

Haven't tried getting back to the UK, but always trying to get back to the other 3 places mentioned

I think it was February 2004 when i first visited town, I came down on the 1300hrs train from Bangkok and stayed at Fulay guest house(over the water).
It was OK there but I now stay at Jings.

I used to stay at Pattaya, Bangkok, Hua Hin, Koh Tao, Koh Samui and maybe fly back to Pattaya, now I have come to my senses and just stay in Hua Hin.

I visited Hua Hin on my own a couple of days in Feb 1993. I had been to Chang Mai and Chang Rai to learn about how civil society/peoples organisations could use development aid money to support indigenous groups who had (and still have) a tough time in the Thai society. I was tired and went down just to rest (stayed at Sofitel) before going back to Europe. Have always wanted to come back and it will be now i Februari - after 19 years.
