I was always in the back with a couple of others and had to follow the marked trail carefully, but it was not difficult. Don's Hua Hin Forum name is Donald Allen Tetley. Send him a PM. He is not only an organizer in hash run/walks, and hash biking outings, but has recently started a new hiking club that walks to unusual scenic attractions around the area as well.
Thanks hhf--much appreciated. Dropped him a PM.

bcrglobal, I haven't been involved with the Hash here, but from my own experience 20 years ago in Pakistan, I recall being in a large sub-group known as SCBs (Short-Cutting Bastards) - beer in one hand, fag in the other. I'll bet my bottom dollar you'll be able to walk the course faster than most will run it!

^ Exactly, when I was walking with them they had a member who would double back and look after the slow ones like us at the end and offer short cut directions that sometimes helped us to come out in front of the runners at the end!

Thanks - now I understand! People don't really want to live in HH at all - they just want the 77110 postcode

I don't know about others, but many of the attributes that attracted me to Hua Hin in the first place either no longer exist (because of the big building boom that started about the time I discovered the place) or have lost their luster over the years in the harsh light of living here permanently. Looking around I still consider it one of the best places to live in Thailand though.

To be honest could not care less about the postcode it is not as if it means anything to anyone outside Thailand.
We have been coming to Hua Hin since the late 80's and living here for over 4 years and so have seen a lot of changes. We are very happy here and as HHF says it is probably one of the best areas in Thailand to live but the town itself holds little attraction for us. I lived outside a coastal town in the UK and rarely went into the town centre - it was for tourists; it is the same here in Hua Hin and once you live here you soon stop being a tourist.

Since Moja was kind enough to give the opportunity, the same applies exactly to the Pattaya area as well. I know some people who haven't been near the naughty zones in years. Everything is expanding east and south towards Sattahip. Pete

Along the same lines we traveled to Phuket this past trip and I could see myself living on the island but the town centers hold no interest to me, too crowded and touristy

Although I have only been here 3 months, I agree with Moja's comments. When we came out last year, we were based in the town centre, we did not go much out of town then. Eating locally as newbie’s do. Since coming back this year, we have found better eateries out of town than on our last visit, just locally or in Khao Takiap. On our last visit to eat in the town centre, I felt I was being conned slightly. We ate in a restaurant near the piers, 2 beers, 1 coke, 2 water, 3 main courses, tiny ice cream, food not good 2600 baht. Sad unsmiling service. On the way back to the car, which was parked down on the Sofitel Road, we were approached by at least 5 tailors en route...it gets a bit tiresome. Don't these tailors know that if we wanted a suit we would go into their shop on our own accord. We went for a coffee opposite the Japanese restaurant, the worst coffee in town, unsmiling service...they are in the most prime of HH there, it should be fabulous. I agree with the pavements...every so often approached by a taxi firm. The restaurants in town have gone downhill.
If you eat outside the down on the other side of the railway as Moja once kindly pointed out to me. The food is better, lovely service, fresh, for a fraction of the cost. For 2 starters, 2 mains + rice, 2 big beers, ice cream 1 coffee under 500 baht....a big difference..and better. 8)
I agree that local expats, once they get used to a town, they normally avoid the centre of town, whether it be HH, Bournemouth or centre of London come to that. Find good places in the outskirts where packing is easy as well 8) I must say the night market has lost it lustre too for me :(

All of these comments should be in a new thread (feel free to start one), I believe we have several on living in Hua Hin and a couple on the Hash - this topic is about a new cafe. Thanks.

To refresh...It is called:
Best beans coffee, Nongkae Takiap road, Nong Kae Hua Hin. Just a few mins from the flyover going down to Khao Takiap on the left, very end shop.
Yum!

Well, I'm certainly going to give it a go - especially the Beer Garden! Unfortunately have to do a few ''Tours of duty'' in Russia and China first  but will be there in December!!

More precisely... next to Cicada. Area difficult to park on weekends due to Cicada but Best Beans have some secure space off road right in front of cafe.

My wife and I enjoyed a snack there several days ago, along with a long chat with Pat, the owner (been in Thailand 18 years).

as i found out this morning, it is closed on mondays. owner was kind enough to take pity and make me an excellent latte and show me around. smart. esp. upstairs. Definitely unique in HH with the outside bar area with big screen, and inside air con cafe downstairs and big chill out area with big comfy sofas upstairs.

fills a big big gap.

I guess some of us are just 'townies' at heart - lets face it HH isn't exactly a big place. But in response to some of Sianis' and others points - I actually think the Night Market area in HH has improved. Certainly in terms of the eateries down there. I just like to sit and watch the antics of new tourists as well.
Some of the pier area restaurants have been a ripoff for years I'm afraid and they certainly are tourist ground only. For me gazing out to sea in a brisk breeze doesn't compare at all with squeezing into a noisy, hot, colourful and chaotic market front restaurant.
As for cafe coffees I'm a heathen and won't tolerate all the skinny latte frappe crappe anywhere, especially when a decent hot black cuppa can be had at a stall for 10 or 20 baht!

Now the tailors are a different, and off topic matter altogether, but given time they will get to know the expats and, believe it or not, will leave you alone - come the glorious day!
