Is this anything to do with mirror scenes. You know - broken or no mirror, with another person copying every move of the first person.

Groucho Marx - Duck Soup
Charlie Chaplin - The Floorwalker
David Niven - The Pink Panther

David Niven would be the odd one out as he and Robert Wagner were wearing Gorilla costumes at the time. It could even have been two stand ins doing the routine.

The other possible odd man out would be Chaplin as he was the original on film with The Floorwalker.... the other two just developed the joke further.
