Thailand's premier ska outfit roused them out of their seats at Singapore's Mosaic Festival
Mix the upbeat tones of ska with some steady reggae rhythms and a dash of smooth jazz, top it off with a distinctly Thai taste and you get T-Bone, one of Thailand's top internationally acclaimed acts. It's barely half an hour before the band is slated to take on the Surf and Ska stage at Singapore's Mosaic Music Festival 2011 late last month.
T-Bone front man Gap greets me with an easy smile, looking every inch the reggae superstar, with his dreadlocks and dapper plaid shirt. After all, he is _ along with the rest of the members of this nine-person ensemble _ no stranger to international performances. In 2005, along with Sek Loso, T-Bone become one of the first two Thai bands to perform at the Glastonbury Festival. They played there again in 2007, and also appeared at the Smiley Festival in 2009 and a tsunami benefit in London among other stops abroad.
It is the band's third time performing in Singapore, a country known for bringing in a wide array of musical acts to suit a culturally diverse audience, but it is also their first time at this particular music festival.

Music that reggae developed from in Jamaica. Started in the 50s I believe.
Some more recent bands would be The Specials (more two tone, ie black and white) and Madness (again two tone rather than original ska). However, the beat is still there.
Great for dancing to, hhfarang - as long as it's not too hot!!

But.... I thought reggae itself was the music developed in Jamaica around that time... how is ska different?Music that reggae developed from in Jamaica. Started in the 50s I believe.
I guess I better search and listen to some on the web. I was with an English born Jamaican girl for years in the UK. Her Mum and friends had loads of the "old music" from Jamaica. They'd quite often refer to it as "revival" to differentiate it from reggae music which they regarded as too modern at that time. "Rock Steady" also grew out of Ska before reggae.
At least that's what I was told by my ex's Mum. If your searches can clarify, please let me know. The beat and rhythm of reggae has Ska in it, but maybe reggae uses more bass whereas Ska and Rock Steady had more of a calypso sound? I'm not 100% sure.

Ska vs Reggae
Ska and Reggae belong to the Jamaican music genre. Reggae, in broader sense, is referred to most types of Jamaican music. Well, though both Ska and Reggae are of Jamaican genre, they differ in tone, music and the instruments used.
First of all, when comparing the origin of Ska and Reggae, it was Ska music that was developed first; while Ska originated in the 1950′s, Reggae originated in the 1960′s.
When talking about Ska, it combines elements of calypso and Caribbean mento, with rhythm and blues and Ameriocan jazz. Reggae is now used in a broader sense to refer the Jamaican genre of music.
When talking about the characteristics of Ska and Reggae, Ska is based on a walking bass line, which is accented with rhythms on the upbeat. On the other hand, Reggae has a rhythm-style, which has regular chops on the offbeat. Well, Reggae has a much slower rhythm compared to Ska. Another difference is that Reggae has a slower tempo than that of Ska. Unlike Reggae, Ska music has horns.
Reggae music is also characterized by a heavy back-beating rhythm. On the other hand, Ska music is quick, upbeat and exciting.
Now comparing the instruments, Ska has guitar, bass guitar, trombone, trumpet, saxophone, drums, piano and organ. Reggae has guitar, drums, organ and melodica.
Different theories are attributed to the origin of the word Ska. One theory says that some musicians coined the word Ska because of the scratching guitar strum. Another theory is that during a recording session, bassist Cluett Johnson asked guitarist Ranglin to play music like ska. There is yet another theory that says that Ska is derived from ‘skavoovie’, by which Johnson used to greet his friends.
When looking at the etymology of Reggae, the Dictionary of Jamaican English has listed the word as recently established for the word rege, which could mean ragged clothing, or quarrel. The term reggae was first used in the musical context when it appeared in print with the rocksteady hit ‘Do the Reggay’. Another theory says that the term was derived from Spanish, and means king’s music.

Ska Music originated in Jamaica as a result of Jamaican musicians adopting and personalising many different forms of American music. By the early 1950's Jamaican bands were taking inspiration from American artists and forming bands like Eric Deans Orchestra featuring the talents of trombonist Don Drummond and guitarist Ernest Ranglin. By the end of the 1950's, jazz, r&b, and mento (a style of calypso) influences were merged into a new style called Shuffle. Shuffle gained popularity through the works of such greats as Neville Esson, Owen Grey, The Overtakers, and The Matador Allstars.
In 1962, a time when Jamaica was copying the musical style of America, Cecil Bustamente Campbell, later known as Prince Buster, knew that something new was needed. He had his guitarist Jah Jerry emphasize the offbeat instead of the downbeat. To the present day, the offbeat is essential to Jamaican music styles. Ska Music was born.
Despite the primitive mono recording facilities, it was the determination of the ska enthusiasts which enabled ska to become the first truly commercial Jamaican Music. In fact, the ska was later named the national dance and music of Jamaica.
In the 1970's the Rude Boy ideals were revitalized and expressed in the fusion of reggae and punk by bands such as The Clash (Rudie Can't Fail). In the mid to late 1970's, bands such as The Coventry Automatics chose to use ska instead of reggae because, according to Jerry Dammers, it was easier. The Coventry Automatics later became The Automatics then The Specials AKA The Automatics, then The Special AKA, then The Specials.
In 1979 2-Tone Records was formed. Black and white became a symbol and 2 Tone ska was born. The 2 Tone logo of a man in a black suit white shirt, black tie, sunglasses, pork pie hat, white socks and black loafers became the official logo and was named Walt Jabsco.
Bands such as Madness, The Beat, The Selecter, The Bodysnatchers, and The Specials revitalized the classic ska sounds of Prince Buster.
Two Tone bands may have been the most popular from 1978-85 however they were not the only ones playing ska. Others included The Tigers, Ska City Rockers and The Akrylykz.
Ska has a major influence on the young. Most ska shows are all ages. Also, Ska remains a harmonious unification of numerous types of musical styles and people who love it.

Scheduled for Saturday, May 14, from noon to midnight on Prachuap Khiri Khan's popular beach, the music festival is expected to attract a bigger crowd than ever with the appearance of a world-class ska and jazz band from Japan, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, and a "glow-in-the-dark" ambience.
This year the extravaganza runs under the concept of "Funtastic 4", which comprises Fun, Firm, Fashion and Film.
The audience will have fun with ska, reggae, pop, dance and surf music, and get firm with a pre-show of extreme water sports before exploring many fashion-related activities such as nail painting, a dreadlock salon, glow-in-the-dark tattoos and a beach fashion shop. There will also be sing-along movies on a giant screen.
