Your First TV Shows
Anyone remember the first show(s) you watched as a kid and what year it was? Pete

I can remember The Woodentops, Andy Pandy, Bill & Ben, and Torchy from about 1960.

Re: Your First TV Shows
We in Finland were always a bit behind the times but these shows I can recall from the 60's. That's the decade I was born: Batman, Rin Tin Tin, Bonanza, Lassie. Oh dear, there must have been others but then again I was less than 10 years old.

I can see we're going to have geographical differences with this one.
For Bamboo it may have been a Khrushchev speech from a Russian signal?

EDIT: Whoops, he posted while I was.

I've just remembered that very controversial programme, Captain Pugwash, also from 1960. I think it has been banned these days as being unsuitable for its target audience - young children.

Re: Your First TV Shows
First tv I remember watching was the Queens coronation in 1953 about 10 of us watching this screen about a foot wide in a box the size about 4 ft by 2 ft in black and white. We were at my grandmothers who had the only television in the family.
Woke up this morning breathing that's a good start to the day.
Re: Your First TV Shows
We got our first TV shortly after they came out, about 1952-53. Without a doubt my first show was The Howdy Doody Show ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howdy_Doody ). Used to watch it everyday and I don't recall much else as the only other things I remember was the nightly news and speeches given by Pope Pius XII which my parents watched and seemed to be on often. The RCC saw the power of TV early on!

Re: Your First TV Shows
I think, we were lucky as no Khrushchev or Breznev created shows were broadcasted in my youth in Finland. All we got was U.S. based shows, as seen from my post above. Then in the 70¨s the English comedies, like On The Buses and Benny Hill Show came along and life became so much merrier.I can see we're going to have geographical differences with this one.For Bamboo it may have been a Khrushchev speech from a Russian signal?

Andy Pandy for me!
I think I liked it at the time?
There was an innocence for children in those days.
Then books of fables, the awe of simplistic classical history and empire. Only later (I still have those books), did I realise it was an era already passed.

Re: Your First TV Shows
Grew up in Zambia and South Africa, so didn't get to watch much TV
English language programs didn't start until 6pm, so bizarrely, my favorite TV show as a kid was ''The Sweeney''...... dubbed into Afrikaans!

Well, I am surprised, Pete.
What about Mickey Mouse Club with Annette Funicello. I guess TV did not start in Australia until a couple of years after the USA, but I recall Annette Funicello as being a teenage boys dream while I was still at School.

Re: Your First TV Shows
Yes, for sure but didn't start on TV until 1955. I just focused on the first above. Beside the MM Club, Rin Tin Tin, Lone Ranger, Cisco Kid and Davey Crocket were favourites, and of course the Walt Disney Show. PeteNereus wrote:Well, I am surprised, Pete.![]()
