The Happy Gardener

Post by PeteC »

We have a tree we bought fully grown (about 18 years old) and planted as we were landscaping our place to give shade to the pool. This was about 3 years ago. It did well for a year then started to drop leaves and re-grow them 3 times in a year.

Finally got a tree man in who sprayed it for something in Thai called a "naun" (pronounced the same as the Thai word for sleep), apparently some kind of worm that infests the tree. In addition he applied a feeding of something called B-1. I think it's actually concentrated vitamin B-1 but stand to be corrected on that, one cap full to a full bucket of water.

Ten days now after the treatments and the tree is in it's full glory. :D We're so pleased with the results we're going to bring the man back each quarter to treat and feed all the trees. Well worth it to assure everything growing is fit.

Anyone else have any gardening tips specific to our tropical home here? Pete

No Tips but wouldn't mind his number. I'm north side of town.

All these years Jimmy and you forget I'm not a Hua Hin'ite. :D I'm over in Rayong.

I punt to HHF who has his own gardener, and I'm sure he knows people who can do the job there.

We found our guy by going to a place that specializes in selling/transplanting trees that are bigger than saplings, about in the 5 year old and up to 25 year old range. I'm sure there are places like that over there. Pete

Edit: Technicalities...before Roel and Buks get to me. :D Naun, besides being the name of the tree worm, is also the word for lie down or lay down. 'Laup' is the word for sleep. So, when you naun, you'll probably laup shortly. My lazy Thai often gets the best of me. Pete

Ha ha, that's a cool result Pete. Never say never eh? To be honest, when I saw the thread title, I thought "This should be fun. Yeah! If he turns up etc." However, will cage that cynic inside me for this one. Lucky dude, quality, and good for your tree to find some guy who knows his stuff.

You want my garden advice after having (and supporting) a rai and a half for six years... get the smallest plot you can stand and cement it all... then put in potted plants that are easy to replace when they die! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

We bought a sweet chesnut tree about 3.5 metres tall in 2002 and planted it in a nice well prepared hole. Put in some blood and bone powder and a bag of manure on top, mixed in with the soil.

Damn thing dropped every leaf 1 week later and it looked like death, but a few days later the leaves started to grow again. :?
Now it is a bloody nuisance and has had to be trimmed down 3 times. Plus the leaves are so rubbery they don't rot down and the gardener has to pick up fallen leaves each week and dispose of them.

hhfarang That is bloody good advice.

I would paint the concrete green as well. :thumb:

Good advice.
Throw in a nice table with a few chairs, a pair of sun beds and it looks great!

I think the sunbeds are already there if you look at the picture!
