That's very American in design ever since the 60's. Every home I owned in the U.S. that was built after 1960, including one built in 1998, had a combined kitchen, dining, family room area and they are still building like that. It is very family oriented so that when the cook is in the kitchen they can still interact with the family in the family room and not feel isolated as in old style separate-room kitchens.
In our house in Issan the kitchen's not even in the same building, we have it in a completely seperate structure a couple of meters away.
It's a great idea in Asia as it keeps all the cooking smells and heat out of the house.
The last thing you want is someone using a wok in the lounge.

How does the cook feel when there is a party going on in the house and she/he is isolated... like the hired help I suspect.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

^ Issan house, do you have an outdoor toilet too? :D :D :D

I think this thread is about Western style houses although I'm sure split will build a rural Issan style house with separate kitchen, toilet, and roof rainwater collection system if that's what someone wants.

Anyone know if there is a market in Hua Hin for spec homes?

spec homes have been in HH since developments began some 7 years ago.
developers build the homes and people buy them.
only recently had the market dropped so much that homes are now being built to order, however, the design will usually be the same as the rest on an existing development.
