Political un-rest and rally
Re: Political un-rest and rally
I get the impression we pick and choose the propoganda we like? I think most of the coverage has been reasonable in what are very difficult and dangerous situations to report in. Maybe the beeb is still aware of the 'lesse majeste' stuff thrown at one of their own?
Sky, at least, covered the tanker incident and to be honest, I'm suffering from incident overload, I'm watching pictures or video reports, and not really absorbing what the reporter has to say!

Just the point I was making - I tend to treat anything coming from that source with great suspicion.buksida wrote:THE NATION

THE NATION lies again
The journo "attacked" by protesters in Pathumwanaram Temple is a Thai coordinator for Irrawady and France 24.
It was shown on Channel 3 that the coordinator was “taken” not “Attacked” at the backstage and the Red Guards mistakenly thought she was asking the woman to go home. She was released afterwards.

caller,
A picture speaks a thousand words.
I am a graphic designer, I have studied the effects of colour and imagery on psychology, its part of what I do for a living. I have also worked for a large, experienced Public Relations firm and you will be surprised at what information that comes from the news is actually advertising. The next time you see the latest breakthrough in modern medicine, you can pretty much guarantee that there is bribery involved. The PR guys I worked with got all the latest stuff for free, whatever company they worked for. I could go on and on, but my point is really that it is another form of brainwashing.
Another example is the financial markets, I trade stocks for a hobby, not big time, purely fun (might sound strange, but I love the challenge). The media is always creating some excuse for gains and falls, but the truth is most of the time its not even related and they are far from correct.
You say that we choose our propaganda, I disagree, the propaganda chooses us. There are different levels, methods & forms and the main goal of the successful media is to get the message out.

Are you talking about advertising or news reporting? I appreciate your viewpoint, but I think I'm old, wise and cynical enough to make my own mind up, thanks.cozza wrote:You say that we choose our propaganda, I disagree, the propaganda chooses us. Re: Political un-rest and rally
I think one point that the Western media is getting increasingly sceptical of is the governments repeated justification for the heavy amount of gunfire based on their claim that there are about 500 heavily armed hardliners amongst the Red shirts.
Whilst there obviously has been some shooting from both sides, it certainly appears to be disproportionate.
So far there have been 37 civilians killed against 1 member of the military and the CRES could only manage to find a picture of a blackshirt with an old revolver and another with a M79 grenade launcer in a recent press conferance.

Re: Political un-rest and rally
I am amazed at the number of farang idiots including dopey female reporters wearing flack jackets and riot head gear with PRESS printed on them blithely taking pics with black long lensed cameras and talking to the belligerents near to the heat of the battle. The bloody soldiers are already under enough pressure without these death defiers and seekers of a quick story putting themselves and others at risk. Just ask Seah daeng - oops sorry you can't.
The bosses of these people sure have an interesting approach to duty of care for the on ground attention seekers are definitely not "Damien Parrer"!!!
As for the Beverly hillbillies - bringing kids to the picnic was the last straw. Lost all credibility with me!!!!

And if nobody reported anything, would we be happy then?
I'm sure if no reporters were there to report, a hell of a lot of bullets would have been fired in all directions killing even more people, red shirts, soldiers and innocent people as well.

Re: Political un-rest and rally
Yes, if you take away the reporters, many of which are Thai, you could just roll over the protest site with tanks and throw the bodies into the sea, but it wouldn't be right would it?
Re: Political un-rest and rally
The Western media are just not up to speed with events or incidents, the news reports from Thai TV, IMO, demonstrate why the army are using the level of force they are.STEVE G wrote:I think one point that the Western media is getting increasingly sceptical of is the governments repeated justification for the heavy amount of gunfire based on their claim that there are about 500 heavily armed hardliners amongst the Red shirts.

Today's briefing on Thai TV showed 1no. man firing off an M79 and 4no. different black-clad gunmen. Two of the gunmen had M16's and were in sort of full black smart'ish full suits, one with 'Army' and one with 'Police' on the back, not sure whether that's intentional to confuse foreign reporters from a distance or whether it's just nothing, you gets lots of army or police outfits in markets etc.
They showed the two non-red shirt affiliated arsonists (14 year old's I think) who set fire to the abonded four-storey ex-Bangkok Bank building. Footage of a boy, maybe 13/14 years old, who was working with adults to repeatedly set light to a rocket launcher poking between tyres in a barracade, which looked like some kind of home-made thing but was pretty heavy, ie: not just fireworks. This footage is a few days old mind, but showed the kids being used in more detail than I saw before.
Reported that 56no. M79 grenades were fired by the protesters between 13th-17th May, that they'd siezed 9,000 tyres, and that 73no. petrol/LPG stations had now had to be closed as in high risk areas. Other reports of gunfire shattering glass at bank in Bonkai, and red-shirt protesters throwing molotov cocktails at soldiers.
Tonight Siam City Bank in Din Daeng on fire and fire trucks are blocked from getting there.
But ... there's no disputing some of the indiscriminent (sp?) live firing at head height by the army though.

Thaksin Denounces Gov't Media Censorship as 'Amateurish'
DUBAI – Deposed Premier Thaksin Shinawatra launched another attack on the Abhisit Government today, deriding the Government's crackdown against the press as 'amateurish' and 'inefficient.'
"When I was Prime Minister I had a dedicated team of lawyers ready to sue anyone who criticized me for a hundred million Baht", he boasted in a video message broadcast to his red-shirt supporters. "I had journalists self-censoring, instead of having to raid press offices, much more efficient. Blocking sites one by one using government bureaucrats is foolish. I would have just bought controlling stakes in all the ISPs, just like I did with ITV, and secretly issued new editorial orders to the managers. That's the modern way to do censorship."
His comments were cheered by the red crowd, many of whom later praised his words as examples of his superior leadership. "Thaksin was a visionary" said Somluk Kriangvien, a Bangkok resident who opposes the Abhisit government. "The way he enriched himself through legal loopholes instead of normal extortion, or the way he bought votes through development instead of direct bribes. That's the Thailand of tomorrow."
Thaksin also downplayed the government's silencing of anti-government radio stations and People's TV, saying that when he returned to power he would shut down ASTV, NationTV, and Manager "in half the time and at one-fourth the cost."
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva responded by insisting that the current government's censorship capabilities were 'state of the art'. "It is clear that the people of Thailand see the current conflict in over-simplified, color-coded and childishly emotional terms" he said, "which just proves that we're doing our job just fine."

Re: Political un-rest and rally
Yes, I'm not disputing the fact that there are gunmen, but I don't see any evidence of there being 500 odd of them, it seems to be only a handful.Today's briefing on Thai TV showed 1no. man firing off an M79 and 4no. different black-clad gunmen. Certainly there doesn't seem to be enough to be a match for the 35,000 troops the Army is trying to deploy.
Re: Political un-rest and rally
No, you certainly don't see them in any great numbers, maybe they haven't really got a great number, maybe they're holding back in the safer, more fortified areas for a later date. Don't suppose anyone really knows except them.STEVE G wrote:Yes, I'm not disputing the fact that there are gunmen, but I don't see any evidence of there being 500 odd of them, it seems to be only a handful.

They're widely reported to have 1,000 guards, thousands of weapons went missing from Army stores etc, even if they've only got 100 they could still reak havoc with all them crowds around. You could only see about 4 or 5 of them at that April 10th massacre, but the outcome was 20 protesters/civilians, 5 soldiers dead and approx. 560 civilians, 265 soldiers injured. Thailand's bloodiest political violence for 20 years. I would think that must have been carried out knowing the army would open up on the crowd!?
Sure 35,000 troops seems excessive, but it's spread across a large perimeter area, plus the 6 or 7 main roads into the protest site.

Go back and read my post again, I think you may have mis-understood. I am saying that the media/news is another form of advertising. Being old, cynical and wise does not change and manipulate what you see and hear. All media have an agenda, political or financial, its still an agenda.
SJ,
Don't forget, the REDS are no longer REDS, they are Multi Coloured now that they have stopped wearing the Red Shirts. How is the army to tell the difference between trouble making protester and normal civilian and then once they get shot, the Red protester can claim they are just a civilian.
