Gprs modem or ipstar are available all over town. ipstar take a deposit which i believe you get back same as an electric meter. If anyone directly lied or deliberately mislead HR then that is quite simply fraud. IF that is the case i would suggest going to your agents office politely demanding your money back until you get it.

I must surely be one of the lucky ones..

I've rented four places since first coming to Thailand and I have never yet had any problem in getting my deposit back. Once on Samui, twice in Bangkok, and then once in Hua-Hin. All four places were rented from Thais and all of them returned the deposit without any kind of fuss.

Now let's go back a few years to when I was renting in Scotland. Ten years - four properties, and never did I get to even smell my deposit. Okay, I know, I shouldn't have rented from farmers. They're a tight bunch the world over.

But, back to LOS.....I have heard about the deposit issue here many times before so I really do consider myself to be lucky.

To the OP - if it really bothers you then why not do as the red shirts are doing. You could set up camp outside the company's office :neener:

I have been lucky too

Rented in HH. 3 month deposit but redeemed by no rent for last three months

Currently renting in HH and no deposit required. Pay your term (or staged payments) up front and that's it. Maids clean and anything out of order you pay for on the spot.

I have rented 8 times in Hua Hin, and have never had any problem getting my deposit back. We kept the places clean anyway, and my daughter always deep cleans the house the day after we leave anyway (we always tell my daughter to keep the deposit.

I agree with Mags as well - we always have to pay the cost of re-connecting satellite TV ourselves.

Sorry for being thick here, but do you mean by not paying the last few months rent that are due as per the contract, equivalent to the number of months deposit given ?

I think thats what Richard means SJ but the contract I have states you cannot use the deposit to pay the monthly rent or you would be in breach..................

I don't think the security deposit can be used as the last month rent anywhere in the world and not paying the rent even just for the last month constitutes a breach of contract.

Agree with the above but I struck a deal with the landlord. They had already spent the deposit and I suspect the rental earnings were not being declared for tax purposes

Have been renting in Perth Australia for the last few years. If it is the same as it is here, as long as you have a phone line, you should be able to get ADSL. Problem starts when you are more than 4kms away from the Phone Exchange.

Here they cannot physically check if they can connect you until the phone is connected in your name after you move in. I got caught here because of this and here there is no onus on the owner or agent for you to be able to have the internet connected.
I signed up on a lease after checking availability on the ISP web site saying yes it was available. When I went to connect, they refused to connect me because I was to far away from the exchange.

After have many heated conversations with them I was informed that the checks carried out, only says it is available from the exchange, not that it is available to the property. That can only be done once the phone is connected.

If there are no data points where I want to have internet access, I have had to install them at my cost and they are then not allowed to be removed when I vacate.

Pay TV is the same is all down to the renter and no onus on the owner/agent to supply.

Only other thing that I can suggest to the Hockeyric is to look for a decent mobile internet service and use that instead of the one via the landline.

That does seem quite a common practice in the LOS Richard, and you've come up with a perfectly logical reason (which hadn't occurred to me before must admit.) If you have a good landlord, and it works, then strictly legal or not it's fine. The landlord is the one taking the risk tax wise.

One other point though which I think shouldn't be underestimated is the relationship between Agent (where there is one) and Landlord, in terms of class, age and status. Although in our ideal world we would expect deposits paid to an Agent to be held in a client account - and rightly so - I doubt that a younger Thai clerk in an Agency for example would refuse to pay over a deposit on demand to an older Landlord, no matter how efficient and respected the Agency might be.
