Drought & Future Flooding?

Post by Green Nomad »

Am I right in saying that HH and surrounding areas are currently suffering a drought? as in most of asia.
Now, I havent been to HH for a few months, but my wife who is staying in Thailand, in fact BKK at the moment, has said everything is very dry and there has been no significant rain for some time.

Our house is located at the end of soi 102 in the midst of prime pineapple farmland, quite low lying, and a good area for flooding, when not if, we start to get alot of rain, which will be soon.

Although our house is slightly raised at the plot, not knowing if this is a bad flood area, I dont know if there will be a problem, the builder has always said the development is not on a flood plain. But a small development near to us at the same level has houses built on stilts :?

Has anyone known any bad flooding inland from HH, I know that some of the areas near to town get affected but what about further inland?

Have a look through the HHAD photo gallery. There used to be quite a few photos showing Soi 102 flooding.

The whole of Soi 102 is prone to flooding,15 years or so ago it was a popular area for offroading and if you wandered of the track you could easily get seriously stuck. My wives uncle had quite a bit of land there and he never imagined that he would make so much money selling it

I've just had a look through, and the photos aren't there any more. The photos I was thinking of showed Thais wading through water that ranged between chest and shoulder deep.

It wouldn't be good business to tell you anything else. Probably a dumb question, but didn't your land survey confirm whether he was telling the truth?

Thats it, we're selling up before it rains.

No seriously, I guess I didnt want to hear that. We have had a lot of rain at times in the past since we moved in a couple years ago, which only caused lying water on the empty land and plots around our place, the drainage they had put in seems to deal with it quite well. But what about a heavy period of rain, still not sure if we have had that as yet, I know what it gets like in Thailand some times. I remember seeing some photos of flooding in HH somewhere, up to waste deep as BB said, that is normally due to the town drainage systems being overwhelmed with water running off the hills into the streets.

Just have to keep fingers crossed.

Actually, on another point, we have been somewhat dissapointed with the builders false promises about security and facilities, that if things do not improve this year we may well look elsewhere.

As you can imagine, I am reluctant to disclose the name of the development.

We used to live down that way, the missus got flooded out one night as the flood got as high as her bed (flash flood took about 20 minutes) She got bit by an animal whilst wading through the water trying to get furniture to a higher level in the house.

Top end of 102 has always been liable to flooding
The wind blows cold on brake and heath
The weeping willows cry
The mountains dark are jagged teeth
Against a leaden sky.

Judging by that first picture, you just need a canoe and an umbrella!
