That would explain it as I've never seen a sherpa wearing a suit.

Many of the ones I've seen look like Pakistanis to me...
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Sad really

Post by Chas »

Its really sad when I have to keep a list of threads to ignore because they have gone completely to hell. "Chopper" raised an interesting issue. IMHO But now it is obviously foo material attached to a viable topic which I would like to read about and discuss without wading through "jokes" on the nationality of tailors.

As well, the thread on the upcoming Centennial tennis match had been destroyed with juvenile humor . .and this is a topic that is interesting and something that will affect us all. I am just waiting for a new thread there.

Chas,
I apologise for my part in this going off topic, so why don't you give us your thoughts on the issue? Do you think pedestrianising the area is a good idea or not? Have you had any accidents/near misses or seen any? Has anyone got any other ideas or any comments about Walking Street in Pattaya - I am hoping someone knows the history of that and how well it works?

I've been around since before it was Walking Street. Rider and Super Joe are recent visitors though as I haven't been there for over a year, so they may have more recent insight.

From my experience it has always worked well and became organized very quickly. The road is open to traffic from about 0600 to 1700 or 1800 hours. All deliveries for the bars and restaurants are done during those hours.

The business owners love it as it now brings in thousands of more people nightly than when it was an open road and people had to fight for parking places, or get jammed up in traffic and simply give up and go to another venue.

It's blocked and police guarded at both ends to prevent any drunken lunatics from trying to drive in. During the day when it's a regular street, the vehicles use the road and the pedestrians the sidewalks, no problems or confusion

In HH, if the big shots can be convinced their businesses will do much better I think they'll agree quickly to make it a walking street. It wouldn't be a bad idea for your beach side street also where all the restaurants are. Pete

I remember it pre-Walking Street. Although it is good to have a large pedestrian precinct these days, I don't remember it being a problem before. It was certainly easier to roll out of a bar in those days to hail a taxi, as opposed to these days when you have to walk to designated taxi ranks (or at least that's the way it was the last time I visited).

...forgot to mention. It's been so successful in Pattaya they're in the process of opening another one in Nakula by the wet market area. Nakula is north of Pattaya and you enter it after you go around the Dolphin traffic circle and continue heading north.

This new walking street will be all culture, crafts, art, bistros, open air markets etc., no girlie bars. They feel that it will revive this entire section of town which has been suffering badly over past years from lack of tourists. Pete

The quantity of people though BB has done a x 10 since those days and I'm referring to the 93-98 period. Right before it became walking street, it resembled a parking lot nightly and I remember times when the MC taxi I was on even couldn't get through. I don't know specifics but I think the deciding factor for the city fathers was indeed the large % increase in tourists year after year. Pete

As far as Bintabaht goes, I can imagine that those couple of medium sized hotels on there wouldn't be too happy if you couldn't get a taxi to the door.
If the local residents and business owners don't want it, I can imagine that the idea would have no chance of being implemented.

I've never noticed such an increase in people, but I'm sure you're correct. I try to visit Thailand during quieter periods, so I wouldn't be aware of the peak times.

I started a thread about this last season after seeing inconsiderate farang and thai twats in SUVs and cars honk honk hassling people in wheelchairs and couples with kids in pushchairs as they tried to negotiate Poolsuk road.

The only time the locals get involved is after someone gets seriously hurt, like they did after the moped scum kids used Binty as a racetrack and wiped out a couple of drunk farangs.

Closing off the sqaure walk isnt difficult and can be done with gates and pavement poles. The night market can empty onto the main road at 10 rather than use Poolsuk as a shortcut.

That however would need the MIB to get involved, and do their jobs properly.

That would also cause no end of parking chaos and require new areas for parking immediately outside the square walk for all the bar lasses mopeds. Areas currently jealously guarded by the local taxi and tuk tuk mafia.

That would require the local authorities to THINK and ACT logically instead of sticking up some more useless neon signs and paper lanterns.

And theres the real sticking point - as long as they make a fat buck the Tessa and MIBs dont give a f**k and wont rock the boat.

Conclusion: Forget it unless the local mayors mum gets run over by three thai kids on a speeding moped down Poolsuk Rd.
