Apple juice.

When I lived in the area I occasionally treated myself to a bottle of 'Merrydown Cider' from All-In Hua Hin. In Nakhon Pathom there are certainly no ciders available anywhere. I love dry cider so it looks like Halex has the range for takeaways. Memo to self to put on the shopping list when we're next down your way...

Cider

Post by Arcadian »

Pete, cider comes in a few varieties, sweet, dry, still and fizzy. Proper cider, also known as scrumpy, comes from the west country and was traditionally brewed by farmers for their own, and workers consumption, particularly during harvest time. It is best avoided by the uninitiated as it is deceptively strong. Those "yokels" who were long term drinkers were rumoured to have had their insides corroded by the stuff.

Yes, it's far stronger than the taste indicates and easy to drink.
Having spent last weekend in a Somerset town and seen the effects on the local lads at first hand, basically it gets you very, very drunk!

Thanks. Seeing the choices I think I would prefer a dry with gas, as the fizzy part would stop me from gulping it. What's a recommendation for that type I can get here?

Now that I understand it is similar to Chang on steroids, I shall use caution. The vitamin C factor is a plus though. :D Pete

in the interest of science and intent on pickling my liver i have consumed vast lakes of skrumpy in my yoof.
We would buy it from farms in the south west.
Some of the containers were suspect. Apparently before they were used for holding scrumpy they contained something corrosive. :?
An old farmers wives tale says that a rat falling into the vat would be totally disolved.
My god it was rough.
The hangovers are legend.
You can still see old boys propping up the Zomerset bars. Drunk it all there life.
they may look like pensioners.
But there only 14.
As a nearly geriatric i prefer a smooth strongbow or scrumpy jack. at about 5%.
The sad thing is cider has a bad reputation in the UK.
There are some ciders called things like WHITE LIGHTENING.
about 9%.
These are appaling. Pure methanol with a hint of an apple.
OMG i am suddenly an expert on alcohol.
I'll drink to that.......

Cider has actually become very popular in the UK over the last few years, it's everywhere, backed by massive ad campaigns.

I quite like an occasional Bulmers or Magners over ice. The Bulmers Pear Cider is pretty good too.

White Lightening, strictly for Alcoholics and Teenagers wanting to get pissed for £2 in the local park.

When I go back to the UK, there's nothing like mixing half a can of White Lightening with half a can of Carlsberg Special Brew. Back to my snakebites again - the nuclear version.
After 3 or 4 pints I become unsteady on my feet and my speech goes funny (probably trying to speak Thai to people who havn't ever ventured further afield than The Elephant and Castle). After 6, I'm smashed. Another one for the road would probably have had me kipping with the winos in the park at The Imperial War Museum as I'd forgotten where my house was and anything after that is a definite hospital and stomach pump job.
Seriously though, on a hot summer's day a dry, fizzy cider at around 5% is refreshing. I have lifted off with the above recipe on a number of occasions, but it's unlikely that a pub would sell you the concoction knowingly. So, I just drink at home and lock myself in.
I'm over 14, but look like 150. Brain cells left - none

Strongbow, Blackthorn, Natch and Olde English.
Cheers!
Actually, from this list, the alcahol content isn't that high for cider if its the same as the mass produced stuff - still nice enough - we get in the UK. Strongbow is 5.3, Blackthorne 4.7 and Olde English 4.5.

Don't know Natch?

I'm in Cornwall at the moment and intend stopping at the Cornish Cyder Farm on the way home - naff name, but it sells some great stuff!

Tsk, lomu, anyone reading this might think you were an irresponsible pisshead. Fortunately, we on HHAD know better.

Cider

As kids in Devon we used to go scrumping in the cider apple orchards, bash the apples against the trees and suck the juice.

Westons is sold in most of the bars where I'm working now in Somerset so it must be good and their Stowford Press is a very nice pint.

Saw Oz Clark and James May on telly a while back tasting good old Somerset scrumpy in a a farmers barn.

Straight from the barrel and the farmer and his son were great characters.

Apparently they had 3 brews to choose from.

Dancing cider  , fighting cider :sfight: and my favorite, sleeping cider. ZZzzzzzzzzz :thumb:

I think 3 or 4 pints of either one would finish me off for good.
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Back in the eighties I remember stopping off at a pub in Somerset and they literally had a plastic dustbin of scrumpy behind the bar.
It was very cheap and potent, and when you ordered one the barman just got a pint pot and scooped out a glassful. I can't imagine that sort of thing would be legal anymore.
