I have visited Thailand for years while living and working in Vietnam and when the opportunity arrose to live here.... I had to grab it.

Genrally I am finding you can get a lot done here..... with patience and smiles. Therefore I leave everything for my second week home, as I am deficit of either my first week!

Also a few friendly expats around town have pointed me in the right direction. My thanks to them.

However you will need to prove residence. To do this I was advised to take a copy of my rental agreement to the HH Police which I proceeded to do and a letter of residence was forthcoming. I paid for it.

Did you get the letter of residence from HH Police or HH Immigration Office (that's where I got my letter of residence).

I got it from the HH Police. I read on here that the HH immigration had moved on (to Pranchuap? Any confirmation?) and was advised the HH Police would be a painless procedure which it proved to be. 20 minutes in and out.

Imm are still in HH although they did move from soi 102 to soi 23. As you go north out of HH, soi 23 is the first one after Index.

I'll be renewing my 5 year Thai driving license soon. It was issued in Bangkok but I will renew in Hua Hin (or is that Pran Buri?). What paperwork is required? Copies of yellow book (deeds to my HH condo)? Others? With thanks.

Looking at the requirements it might not be too difficult to get my Thai license this time while i'm around a couple of weeks more.
I'm here on a Multi-Entry 'O" Visa, living with my Thai wife.
Just some questions to the people who live here more frequently than myself:
1. I just recently got my Yellow Book - does that still mean i need to get a letter from the police station, or will a copy of the details page do?
2. Medical certificate - where is the best place to get this in HH?
3. Is my UK license ok to show or do i need to have an international driving license?

For the Medical cert you can get it from the Poly Clinic in Hua Hin and an International Driving License is much better if you wish to avoid some tests at Pranburi.

There are a number of threads on this subject - use the SEARCH.

Bring your yellow book, medical certificate, UK license and your passport.
As long as you have the yellow book you don't need to ask the police for proof of residence.
You may go to any hospital in HH and ask for the medical exam.
(Just a blood pressure test and the usual question from a doctor if you are ill or well)
You will be tested to find out if you are colour blind, your breaking reaction time together with your depth of field ability.

You will get a 1 year license and it will cost you 105 baht I believe.
(After a year you can apply for a 5 year driver license).

That's all.

I have a 5 year motorcycle license, had a car license but lost it. They were issued in Phuket.
Will it be a slam dunk to renew it in Pranburi or wherever? Also, can they do my car also? Now don't laugh but is it in the database???

Seriously though, they do have all the relevant info in their database, but if it's a local or national database I have no idea but I guess it must be a national base. Anybody?
Both Pranburi and Ta Yang/Cha Am issue both car and mc licences.

The car registration for sure is a National Database, as I have renewed a vehicle registered in Pran Buri, in both Bangkok and a Northern Provence. I am 99% sure the same applies to Drivers Licences.

Please be informed that if you drive without a valid driver's license, the insurance will not pay anything in case of an accident. A valid drivers license is an international drivers license that's not expired yet or a Thai drivers license. Most people only have the CTPL (Compulsory Third Party Liability) insurance on their motorbike and this one covers only third party bodily injury or death (and only 50,000 to 100,000 baht). This insurance doesn't cover for third party property damage and in cas the hospital bill of a third party is higher, you will end up paying by yourself anyhow. But even this low amounts will not be paid by the insurance company if you drive without a drivers license.
Especially for farangs it is important to have a third party liability insurance with a much better coverage. You can allways ask a quote at AA Insurance Brokers (see the sponsorsection of HHAD).

Anything else, and also I've heard that they will not let you renew early, i.e., that you must go on or after the expiration date of your current/previous license. Is that true?

Lastly, does anyone have the phone number of the Pranburi licensing office... I did search, both in the forum and on Google but didn't find it.

Your list of documents is correct, but you don't need photos any more - they do it there for the new type licence.

My gf says you can renew from 2 months before the expiry date.

She says the phone number is 032-621343
