saw an excellent UK Channel 4 documentary on Islamic influenced modern music, which is where i managed to find out about Mercan Dede...hes a Sufi follower who uses the chants in his music. Great stuff when perched on top of a camel plodding through a desert....
Khaled is more of an Algerian old pop/wedding singer in the style of the bloke who sang on Desert Rose.....does some damn fine stuff when mixed with other music by Buddha Bar tho.....one of his tracks is on the OST for Fifth Element. You hear a lot of his stuff on trains in Egypt and Tunisia.....
Of course theres always Ofra Hazra as well.....she did a song called Elo Hi that is one of the most haunting songs on a soundtrack....(La Reine Margot). Most of her stuff was more pop, but there are some real beautiful tracks in there....she had an amazing voice....shame how it ended tho.

I know what you mean Sandman, that (pick 5) exercise made me examine my collection closer than I have in a long time and rediscover some items I haven't listened to in a long while.

as for thin lizzy, always been a top band & like sandman i saw them too
probably why their 'live & dangerous' album is consistently in the top ten of live albums of all time
ps & as i write this post 'even the losers' is playing on planet rock radio

Saw Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers live at Knebworth in '78 - they were superb. Genesis were the 'headliner' band, but the support bands: Tom Petty, Devo, etc. were excellent! I was a Genesis fan then, I'm not really into them now. Strange how tastes change...

thanks HHF.....had a great weekend listening to the old bands again..... Lizzy was excellent....could almost see that mirror plate on Phils bass acting as a searchlight again....brought a tear to me eye
