Police nab Dutch paedophile suspect in Hua Hin

Acting on an Interpol tip-off, Thai police arrested a 60-year-old Dutch national at Hua Hin beach resort on child sex abuse charges, authorities said Monday.

Willem Gerard Knoppien, 60, was arrested Sunday shortly after police filmed a 12-year-old Thai boy entering and leaving his rented home in Hua Hin, 130 kilometres south of Bangkok.

"We had received a warning from Netherlands Interpol that Knoppien had a child abuse record so we were keeping an eye on him," said Police Colonel Banya Pinsuk, of Thailand's Crimes Against Women and Children unit.

"We asked Knoppien's neighbours to tell us if anything suspicious happened," he added.

On Sunday morning a man on a motorcycle brought a 12-year-old Thai boy to Knoppien's Hua Hin home. Police filmed the boy entering the foreigner's house and leaving one hour later.

Banya said the boy had confessed to having sex with Knoppien for 120 baht (3.50 dollars), while the man who delivered him on the motorcycle received another 200 baht (5.90 dollars).

Knoppien, a frequent visitor to Thailand, denied having sex with the child. (dpa)

A Thai appeals court on Wednesday upheld a 37-year jail term against a Dutch man for sexually molesting a 12-year-old boy.

Willem Gerard Knoppien, 54, was arrested in 2007 and convicted of child abuse in 2010 in the beach resort of Hua Hin, 120 kilometres south-west of Bangkok.

The court rejected his appeal, and upheld the sentence of 26 years and eight months for his accomplice, Thanes Bualuang, 35.

Thanes' sentence was lighter because he confessed to the crime.

According to court testimony, Knoppien and Thanes hired the boy to clean the Dutchman's room in Hua Hin and sexually abused him four times.

Knoppien paid the boy 200 baht (6.45 dollars) each time and Thanes paid 120 baht, court records showed.

The boy's parents complained to police, leading to the arrests.

Thanes admitted to soliciting but Knoppien denied all the charges.

The scum is lucky to be alive but may not be for long if he is thrown in the general prison population. He wouldn't last long that way in my home country and I would imagine it's the same way here.

The scum will likely die in prison here unless he can serve most of his sentence in a Dutch prison. I hope he stays here in a Thai monkey house where he belongs.

This guy has ruined the lives of this young boy and his family and I feel sorry for all of them.

I guess they figured somebody had to be officially victimized first, on the record, before anything could be done about it. Sad for the victim, especially innocent children.

Agreed anyone who wishes to abuse children should be locked up and forgotten about or worse in my opinion.

Yeah, digging up threads from 6 years ago is 'off the reservation' imo unless you have good new info or reason.

It's very confusing and we have had a bit of this recently.

Far from me to suggest anything but maybe you should submit your reasoning for re-opening a 5 year old thread or more thread to admin or a mod to be approved, rather like 'Classifieds' these days.

A few times recently I've look at the 'Latest Topics' thread list and found that they are threads from 'God knows when before' and some newbie has 'dug-it-up' for whatever reason with some half-arsed rely.
