Best Value Bar

Post by BEARHUG »

Lots of talk about the best bars in Hua Hin, should ahve a Poll?

Not seen much about the All Nations Guest House, this has a bar and rooms, a Pool Table and serve's food, all you need.

Best of all you can have a Chang Beer for 35 baht, yes 35 baht, just shows the mark up or ripp off in Hua Hin.

WHY IS THE BEER SO EXPENSIVE IN HUA HIN?

Perhaps the other bars will lower their price's.

Chang 35 baht, that will do for everyone I am sure.

AN is a backpacker guesthouse, it always has been, hence the cheap prices. It used to be an expat hang out when Gary Jones ran it, followed by Canadian Tim - no idea on the state of it these days.

I agree with you on the beer mark up but the bars do have to make a profit somehow to cover their ever increasing overheads.

If you want cheaper brew head to some of the bars further out of town, the Thai ones are even cheaper, a good example is the Music Room on soi 51. Personally I'd like to see more big beers for sale in bars - keep us drunkards happy.

I was able to get value at Octopussy or was that bang for the buck. Draft beer is buy two get one free or something like that.

It usually works out cheaper if you order a Jug of draft beer but not all bars will serve a jug.

Back onto beer prices in Hua Hin. The are propably more expensive than elsewhere because Hua Hin rents are considerably higher than most places. Do not think that many bars are making a fortune. In fact most of the bar keeps I know usually struggle to make the annual rent/key money etc.

Have you been to Phuket recently? A beer in a bar or restaurant there can be double what you'll pay here ... want to go further, try one of Bangkok's nightspots

I don't think the prices in HH are too bad, just would like to see a little more variety and BIG bottles!

Strange that they deal in dollars though.

I suppose everyone goes for "good value" and why not?
However, when back in the UK last year, I appreciated the fact that my wife and I couldn't step outside and f##t properly for less than 50 pounds.
Needless to say, that was unsustainable, financially for us.
We're happy to be back here again and comparing prices. It's the same the world over.

As a restaurant owner : sorry (partner) back here in Perth , I always am amused by patrons who come to have a meal and check our prices, and wine list.
Many of them have just had a skinfull at the pub over the road.
One hour there would cost about $50.00
A good meal and a glass of wine would cost about $25.00.
They never worry about the price of beer in the pub , but they are super critical in restaurants.
On the other hand, we have a lot of people who dont care about cost.
The most important things are quality of food/drink and service.
Who cares if someones tries to win business by undercutting.

I don't know why some people would come on holiday then spend their time looking to save a dollar on a bottle of beer.
If we are asking about bars then we should compare like with like.
For the most part, bars sell beer.
Guesthouses sell rooms, food and often other services like tour bookings, moto rental etc etc. Numerous revenue points there.
There's cheap beer in HH.
Its at the 7-11 and you can drink it in your room and avoid tips and other "itrritants" like service.

In the good-old /bad-old days, I constantly had customers who would complain that their drink was a bit more expensive than the local corner shop - there were no 7-11s in those days.
What could I say? I really tried to be "mein host" for a while and explain that we had 13 staff, rent etc etc.
Eventually, I just left those people to the staff. Didn't get involved and couldn't have cared less about them. All the bars were rocking and rolling - why do I need these complainers in here?
Not an easy life.

Absolutely right.
Some people just can't figure out that a bar has bills to pay and given that location is paramount the rent is always on the higher side.
Who wants to bet that 7/11 beer prices would rise if they put in DVD/sound systems, toilets, counters and seats, pool tables and TV sets with satellite?
Say goodbye to 35 baht Leo then!

Also 7/11 (as the main company) get the best deals for any product they sell, since they buy it in hundred thousands during a year, which makes their buying price close to half of what the bar owners buy for.

Roll on Tesco. Long may they remain in this and every country.
I think it's great that the consumer can benefit from some cheap prices and still walk out through the checkout significantly better off than from shopping at local markets etc.
Support your local store!!!! I could write loads on that subject.
An honest question. If you do your shopping at Tesco, rather than the local markets, how much does it save you a month?

On the defence of Tesco: What I mainly buy there is beef and sometimes other meat products. If I need to buy some meat in the afternoon, those sold at the market have been hanging in the hot air for hours. Also the quality of the beef is much better at Tesco than elsewhere here in Hua Hin. That is until Foodland arrives.
