Iceland in Villa Market

I haven't seen this mentioned yet, or maybe I missed it?

Anyway, earlier, I popped into VM by San Paulo hospital and much to my surprise they had two chest freezers full of goods from Iceland. For those that don't know, Iceland is a UK frozen food supermarket, that was always pretty good value. Some of their stuff was pretty basic, other stuff much better.

Anyway, they had quite a diverse range of goods and it's another welcome addition for Brit expats at least. Prices were obviously higher than in the UK, but some still seemed good value to me.

I came away with these - excuse slightly blurred phone pics - must have been the excitement:



So I tried the beef tonight, via the microwave, cooked from frozen, the mash was good, the sauce needed to be a bit thicker (probably would have been if cooked in the oven), flavour was okay, it was lacking onion, I'd give it 6/10.

I rarely go into VM, but that interests me - thank you. I'll make the effort to go and have a look.

Thanks, I'll take a look too. You may notice VM is usually pretty empty compared to other supermarkets. They have an excellent range of imported goods but it's the prices...

I'm not sure they can be compared to other supermarkets in Hua Hin as their range of goods is generally different. I find the one by SP hospital is generally busier than the one at index.

My local one in Bkk is at Thonglor and that is always busy, even with both TOPS and Foodland nearby.

Thanks for the heads up Caller, just spent 1,500 Baht in the Iceland freezers. Battered cod,battered haddock, lasagne, shepherds pie,pasta bake etc. Useful to have a few ready meals in the freezer.

I have to say I wasn't really impressed with anything, I've since bought breaded cod and meat pies but the only good thing I have to say is that they can be cooked from frozen which is useful if you can't be ars*d to go out or the weather is bad like a few days this month. I won't be buying anything else from the Iceland fridge.

Iceland food....can you call this food ? I have been to this boring country more than 3 decades ago, breaded fish, is that a delicacy ? That was the only cooking style at that time.

Is it Iceland food from the country or as I suspect, Iceland the food brand which sells frozen food in the UK (maybe other countries as well)?

To be fair, I don’t think anyone would claim that Iceland products are high-end gourmet fare. Iceland sells a huge variety of frozen foods remarkably cheaply in the UK (e.g. its breaded fish cost about a quarter there of what MV charges here) so it appeals to families with limited time and budgets (and, possibly, taste buds). I reckon there’s room here for Iceland's offerings as an easy alternative to other western food options, like imported fillet steak or whatever. As Pagey said, handy to keep in the freezer for those odd occasions when you don’t want to cook.

The last time I spent some time in the UK, I discovered their "boil in the bag" frozen kippers and smoked haddock, which made an excellent quick and easy hot breakfast when I had to get to work early in the mornings.

Hence my post about the flags. Seems like the staff at Villa aren't the only ones confused by the name.
