'Sand stone' water storage tanks ...

Post by Super Joe »

Anyone out there have any experience with these new style (I think) 'sand stone' effect plastic water storage tanks.
They're supposed to be UV resistant, suitable for use with deep well water and come with a 20 year guarantee.

The 'stainless steel' tanks are having corrosion issues due to the metals or whatever in the well water.

These 'sand stone' 2,000 litre tanks seem worryingly inexpensive at 8,000 Baht.

Cheers anyone,

SJ

There is another thread about these tanks, but cannot find it at the moment.

I replaced my less than 3 years old "Stainless Steel" tank with a 1500 litre "sandstone" type, recommended by the only Thai in Hua Hin that I consider would know the top from the bottom of a tank.

It has not been in long enough to give an opinion about how long it will last. It appears that the inside is coated with some form of gel coat, so should not be bothered with water quality. As for UV resistance, just have to wait and see. At 8,000 Baht I could not agree that it is cheap?

Yeah, not cheap, but the 'sandstone' style doesn't let in the UV light so no green nasties growing in it like you get in the blue ones. I remember the thread about it too, think Terry is the one to ask as, if I remember correctly, he's got them installed at the Lodge, or was going to have it done. Correct me if I'm wrong Mr T.

I believe this is the "missing" thread.

Almost...........

I have successfully used the blue tanks underground - i.e. not subject to sunlight or UV.

I HAD intended on using them as loft cold water storage in a house that I am designing. I am currently contemplating the 'sandstone ' type.

Most 'stainless' steel here is of dubious origin and rusts within a few years unlike the 'food grade' EN58J that I am more familiar with.

There are a couple different kinds now. This first one is named "Natura" and I think cost 5 something. 1,500 liter and used for well water only for the garden. Note the labels for it in the second pic.

This one is a sneak shot into my neighbors yard, a 2000 liter 'Sandstone' brand name. Pete

Forgot to mention. If you look at the Sandstone, the feed pipe is external at the back. The Natura in pic 1, it's internal. It goes in the bottom as can be seen and runs up the inside. Both come with a floating ball/rod feed water cut off system for when you hook up to city water. I've removed mine and installed an electric float that activates the submerged well pump which then fills the tank. Pete

Interesting little sticker shown on that "Natura" tank.

"UV-8 Stabilizer"

Cannot find a great deal about it on the web, but it appears to be some super additive? Do not know if it is an actual product, or some engineering standard.

I am not at the house at the moment, but I believe that is the same tank that I have, and if so it has a bunch of stickers on it, making all sorts of claims.

Then again, TIT, so may just be make believe!

Being in the process of planning a house, I just looked this up and it seems that UV-8 is a standard for a plastic additive to stabilize against ultraviolet light.
I can't post a link as I'm using my mobile, but you can find out the actual standard if you do a search, it seems to be a test involving exposure to a certain intensity of radiation for 8000 hours.

Those Natura tanks come in a variety of colors Steve. I got stuck with gray as was in a rush. From the brochure I recall green, sandstone, reddish clay and off-white. Just about anything to blend into whatever background you have. I have no clue about the guarantee though. If we have one it's filed away somewhere. 2 years now and no problems. Pete

EDIT: From what I've seen they only come in 1,500 and 2,000 liter sizes.

Thanks for all the useful info chaps most helpful, and everything I've read elsewhere seems positive so will give them a go.

From what I've looked up on net, is like what Steve posted, it seems to be a new compound (industry approved in 'x' countries), that is added to the 'make up' of the tanks structure.

Quote: "UV stabilizer - Any chemical compound that, admixed with a thermoplastic resin, selectively absorbs ultraviolet rays; used to prevent ultraviolet degradation of polymers. Also known as ultraviolet stabilizer."

This Thai guy is the only one that I have found that knows what he is doing.
He can also supply the tank. You will need a Thai speaker to arrange it, as his English is very basic, but enough to understand what you need once he sees the job.
