Importing Pets

Post by PeteC »

Have a friend who may move back here from the USA with his Thai wife. They have a dog and are asking advice concerning rules and regulations about bringing an animal into the country.

Anyone have any experience, and/or point in the direction of the Thai Gov site that may have info? Thanks. Pete

I brought 2 dogs from the UK some 3 years ago. Regulations difer from country to country. The main requirement is Rabies clearance certificates and ID chips. In the UK I used a specialist company and the dogs were collected from my home transported to Heathrow checked by a vet at Heathrow, put on the same plane as I was travelling and then delivered to my home in Bangkok. They were away from me for about 24 hours only. Provinded all requirements done no quarantine.

I am sure there is quarantine leaving Thailand as its a rabies country, and I am sure 6 months quarantine in the Uk on arrival.

seems a lot of suffering on the dogs behalf.

Yes, a cat in 1998 from here to Hawaii. Quite a simple process. The vet in Pattaya took care of all the immunizations and paperwork and provided the transportation to Don Muang for the trip on United. He also arranged and paid the freight charges on my behalf. Cage was equipped with a drip water bottle, some dry food, and small litter pan. Cat was given a light sedative before departure. Four hour stopover in Tokyo then on to Honolulu.

State there requires 3 months of quarantine and I hired a local sponsor to visit daily as I was living on one of the outer islands.

I don't recall the cost all in but it was not cheap due to the quarantine and sponsor, probably around $2,400.00 for a kitten born in my garden here, but she was family. Left in Thailand she would have been gone before age 5. She's still alive and pushing 16.

There are Vets for sure in Bangkok and Pattaya who are well experienced in doing this, I'm not sure about HH. Pete

PS: There's no (or wasn't) any quarantine on the Thailand side. All that was required is that all immunizations were up to date prior to departure. Pete

Thank you very much prcscct for your advice. It's really helpful.

As you say - leave them here, what can happen to them who knows. I have 2 cats and I've them for 7 years.

It may be a nightmare for them to go through flights and quarantine, however I couldn't bear the thought of leaving them here if I do decided to go home permanently and I'm sure they'd rather go through it than be left out on the street.

If done the right way and no big flight delays, I think you'll find the cat upon arrival acts the same way it did before you left here. My sponsor met the arriving flight in Honolulu and said the cat was frisky and ready for play.

I was lucky in that Hawaii quarantine is not just a cage but a 2x2x2 meter pen with wooden perches, bushes etc., with bit of jungle appearance. Really made the cat happy. Hope yours is similar.

If I were you I would start looking for a Vet now so you have one ready if you decide to do it. Good luck. Pete
