Re: the above few posts about clearing out dust and such. Thats exactly what I did, took apart safely what I could, blew muck out from wherever as best I could and it was after that the screen I mentioned above came on.

BB that cutting out is exactly what I had, with the screen. Now up and running for nearly 3 hours so fingers crossed that is all it was?

I'm not really sure how you want me to post the results. I saved it as a .txt file, and this is what I've got:

Very useful for a fool like me - many thanks. Kicking myself actually! So basic and it seems the cleaning did the trick. Been at home today and had the laptop on pretty much throughout with no problems.

I would get rid of the following:

O2 - BHO: &Yahoo! Toolbar Helper - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\yt.dll

Then reboot and see how it plays.

Thanks for that.

I tried as you suggested, but only 2 of the 8 files would go. I tried all at the same and 1 at a time. The latest HijackThis report states:

If you cant remove entries using HJT then the infections seem to be very deep rooted and a format and clean reinstall (after data backup) would probably be the best way to go.

I usually find this formula appropriate in most cases:
16 year old + computer + internet = malware + viruses

^ You can add (any age) Thai wife to that equation as well... although after a few years, I've managed to train mine pretty well on (not) clicking on download buttons or opening attachments from unknown email addresses.

That was the answer I was dreading. Fortunately, I sorted the laptop out for her a while back, and still have a full backup of her data from then (so at least I know I'll be restoring a clean set of data).

I know your formula is probably right (fortunately, I never had the problem with my own son), but this was really malicious - removing the virus guard because it was blocking his desire for porn :? :banghead: :banghead:

Many thanks for trying anyway.
