Good point Nereus,
I'll call Lars tomorrow and try to visit the house to check out the el. supply.

JD - point taken. Can we find a central location/person/office for gathering of donations?

cd.

Well I would presume that the Swedish Society has a Chairman and committee already set up to handle any donations made. I certainly trust their promise that any donations made to them would be used along the proposals being made

I think this is a great idea, I would be happy to get involved or offer any assistance, either monetary or otherwise, if I am able.

Agreed entirely JD, the SS is probably best positioned to administrate this effort, and I believe entirely trustworthy. Perhaps they can suggest an actual location for folks to go and hand in their donations.

Excellent responses so far people! Perhaps telephone chats may help to move things briskly along. My number is 081 98 101 92. Of course, we'll report back to this thread.

Put me down for a 500 baht share if you get it organized. The gas for one round trip to PKK in my SUV would probably cost me that much anyway! :D

I visited the proposed house/location on Hua Hin Soi 43 today to check if the el. supply can accomodate the ACs required.

hmmmmmmm, this IS Thailand indeed.

It's a new house, 3 storeys, two rooms on each upper floor, measuring about 4x5 metres, ceilings 2.60m high, and the ground floor front room is about the same size with a WC and kitchen in the back. The el. system is new, single phase, 25mm cables in (capacity 80 amps) to a 16 channel consumer board with a 63A main breaker and 20A breakers for each of the AC circuits which are wired to each room, cables hanging from the walls just below the ceiling. The metre outside is 15/45A but can be changed to 30/60A. There's no 3-phase in the street.

My AC guy recommends 18,300 BTU for rooms this size, which require 24 amps at full output. 12,000 BTU units require 16 amps. Whichever way I spin it, I can't get 5 ACs to run on a single-phase 30 amp supply, but my experience (in Thailand) shows that since nothing actually gets full input, nothing actually works at full output either!

I have my doubts, but since I'm not an el. engineer I'd like to investigate further with the help a good spark. Mine is too busy and I don't want to waste his time until this project has more meat on the bone.

We met four officers from Imigration at the house - they were checking it out and will report to their chief who will presumably soon decide whether they actually want this house or not. They're all very happy, of course, that the farangs are considering helping out.

We met the house owner too, who told us that the rent (for the other half of this semi-detached townhouse) is 25.000 baht monthly. Well, one of my mates lives at Somarprong in a 3-bed, 2-bath villa with big living room and kitchen for 7.500 baht per month. There's 3-phase available and much easier parking than at Soi 43.

Long story short, I would not be surprised if the Imm. chief rejects this house, hopefully in preference for another.

Still, they may need financial help from us, so let's keep the idea warm and see how it all pans out in the course of this week.

If there is an official announcement from the Immigration Office or another responsible authority of the province Prachuabkhirikhan, that they'd appreciate financial support to keep an Office in Hua Hin to make life more comfortable for expats, tourists and other foreigners which bring money into city, I won't hesitate to donate my part, too.
But so long I don't read anything officially, it can't and won't be my business!

Golden rule: Who's honesty and really in need of financial supports has to make it clear by his self without any roundabout ways...especially offices which are paid by taxes and under the control of a government!

You're quite right Hogus, of course, I reckon we all feel the same way.

For the moment, we're gathering and spreading information and attempting to guage the level of willingness to contribute to a solution. For sure, no donations will be collected nor spent nor handed over without satisfactory documentation and absolute certainty that Imm. is moving into whichever property it turns out to be.

There's certainly nothing sinister going on on the farang side. The Swedish connection has volunteered that they may be able to help with the cost of air-con, and everyone has the opportunity to join in the effort.

Well, it shouldn't be a big problem for the Immigration Office to publish a proclamation that they haven't enough financial resources to keep an Office in Hua Hin (because of i.e. lack of taxes in province, worldwide credit crunch, miserable investment situation etc) ....
This would also open a way to sample donations by their selves - as it should be!
I'm sure they'll get the support they need ! :thumb:

Thanks guys. I'm only working with this beause I know how far away Singh Korn is and how exciting it is NOT to wait there in the heat. Hogus is right again; it would be entirely correct and proper for Imm. to announce their predicament and request aid from the community, then lead this campaign themselves.

At least, this process so far has already generated goodwill. The officers I met this morning were geniunely appreciative of our efforts.

I do wonder though, who might be upstairs sipping his martini, smirking at the antics of the crowd below.

Immagration and new home here in HH

Post by Pundi64 »

OK guys, I not in the Swedish Community, but I do go to soi 102 now and don't want to take a 240 kilo round trip, only to be told I need more paperwork, so I'll do my part as well as everyone else, you have my contribution and vote on whatever transpires with new digs. :thumb:

There appears to be a lot of 'goodwill' work going on from HHAD members and well done to you all. However the house in Soi 43 does seem to be small and very expensive, and what about good parking?

There must be so many other properties that are more suitable and our Estate Agent friends can surely lead on identifying more suitable premises. A town house with all the inconvenience of having to go upstairs etc!! I say no more and my guess is that Immigration will turn it down.

Come on you AGENTS lets hear from you ASAP.

It's unlikely that agents can help - inexpensive rentals are seldom/never listed with agents.

I've just received word from the Swedish connection that Imm. is today considering a different house on the west side of town.
More info as it arrives ...

Don't be reaching for your wallets just yet ...

The Swedish group held a meeting this evening (Thursday) to discuss their wilingness/readiness to provide some financial support to help keep Immigration in Hua Hin, and the meeting was visited by three officers from Imm. Afterwards, my mate Lars came over to our local bar on Soi Wat Nikro 1 to tell us that, well, the situation was unclear before the meeting and it's a lot unclearer now!

The townhouse on Soi 43 has been dropped apparently because the landlord upped the rent from 20 to 24 grand and insisted that any ACs installed would become his property. Did I hear someone say T.I.T?

The three ociffers did say tonight that they have a couple of other options and the result is that we'll have to wait until next week before we know anything. It's clear, though, that the Imm. staff feel the same way we do about the plan to move back to Nakhon Nowhere, sorry, Singkorn, and they are enthusiastically pursuing a solution here in Hua Hin.

I wish 'em Chok dee mak mak, and then some.
