Be very careful Buksi, a cheap set of copies will do no favours to your mrs, the shafts are the problem, basically no rigidity in the shaft (!!) which means off centre hits will go anywhere. Go to Tanya plaza in BKK and find a good set of second hand clubs.

I've been advised the same about clones - these were not copies (the other JW can confirm).

That said, I need to do something to beat her so a set of floppy bats may just do the trick ... bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha.

Funny enough, I got stuck with playing with a set of clones from China for a few months and while it was frustrating at times, they didn't cost me more than 4-5 shots per round. The shafts are quite whippy so when you get the right timing, the ball can fly. I could hit a 180 yard seven iron when I am usually under 150 which drove me nuts because it wasn't consistent at all but with the woods, it was pretty good. I knocked a few over 300. I got rid of them as soon as I could(and made money too:-) but I would say it's good value for money for the occasional golfer with a high handicap and a slower swing. Full set with bag/travel bag and umbrella was less than 200US and I sold it used for about 400...

Can anyone afford to lose 4 or 5 shots per round!!!

"which drove me nuts because it wasn't consistent" - usually lots of trouble over the green!

Best thing you did was get rid!

I don't think it's that big of a deal whether I play 85 or 90 or 95 but that's just me... If I'm playing 3-4 times a week, I might get more annoyed but when you're out once or twice a month...what can you expect? Certainly not consistency

And there's no doubt that the game is more enjoyable with nice clubs if one can afford them...

One word .... putting .... :cuss: :guns: :banghead:    :run:

Now being a newbie to golf I'm finding it more frustrating than enjoyable at the moment, its like taking one step forwards and two back. My putting it atrocious and I'm not going to blame it on the moon cratered, 45 degree greens where we play because 1) its free and 2) other people can putt on them.

So are those putting mats useful? Any other tips for practising your putts? I've read the literature and listened to the advice but the 'effing ball just wont go down.

Do not decelerate at impact.
Push the club head though the ball.
Most good putters take the clubhead back the same distance as they finnish after striking the putt
If need be take the club back a lesser distance than you finnish past the ball as this eliminates the deceleration at impact
In conclusion a nice slow non decelerating rythm

It is one of the perpetual mysteries of the game that so few people ever get putting lessons. Putting is half the game - a level round of 72 is 36 shots and 36 puts. So my hint is - skip the next couple of lessons on the the long game and have putting lessons instead.

Good luck

Get yourself up to the range at Black Mountain and practise. Sometimes dont go at a hole - jusy try and get 5 balls in a close area together. Hot some with your eyes shut - helps you to feel the stroke.

Have a short session with the other JW is the best advise - he putts like God!!

It will be suoer frustrating for a while.... i mean all of your life!

Enjoy,

Are those putting mats you can buy in golf shops any good? Don't have much time for visits to courses during the week unfortunately, though I have been up to Palm Hills to practise on their green but that is a far cry from the ones at our local course which are like putting on the knobbly side of a Ryvita.

Jim, I know what you're saying, I'll get round a 9 hole in 60 ... with nearly 30 putts.

I don't know about putting lessons... no doubt that a pro can give you a few pointers but at the end of the day, it's about the feel and your mind. It's not so much about the mechanics although you do need to make sure you don't have any basic problems.

The mats won't hurt but again it won't hep you read a green, it won't help you much with the various speed but it might help getting a more consistent stroke.

Making a little tunnel for your putter and the ball to go through will help make sure that you keep your pendulum motion straight and consistent.

Some people use the line or words on the ball to try to keep their line. Forget about looking at the hole once you made up your mind on your line. The hole isn't going anywhere, your ball is...Keep your hands loose to prevent trying to guide the ball with your hands, as was mentioned, get a good follow through never decelerating. Try not to think about putting the ball in the hole but instead concentrate on getting in a circle of about 1m in diametre. You seem to be averaging three puts per hole, your goal should be to get two putts, the second one hopefully being a gimme.

Make sure you have a good putter, it shouldn't be completely flat and have an angle. The Odyssey two ball seem to help a lot of people with alignment.

As with any other golf stroke, you won't get much better by just playing, you need to practice....practice and then practice some more

buksida,
I'm no golf expert but I have always been quite a good putter. If you break down what is going wrong with your putts is it that you have trouble 'reading' the putt and so over or underhit, or get the slope wrong, or are you just inconsistent? JW gives good advice, and the one bit of advice I always valued was one where you imagine the hole is the size of a a dustbin lid and aim to get in that rather than always trying to get in the actual hole; if you can visualise that when you are putting it seems to somehow make it easier. I hope it helps someone reading this because it certainly helped me.
