Heavy storms kill 2, damage homes

Published: 6 May 2013 at 00.00
Newspaper section: News

Two people were killed and two others were injured in incidents relating to heavy rainstorms in the North and the Central Plains from Saturday night to yesterday morning.

The wall of the Home Place housing estate in Pathum Thani fell on two houses adjacent to the community yesterday afternoon after heavy rains in the morning weakened the structure. An elderly woman was injured. PONGPAT WONGYALA (Photo at link)

A 32-year-old Myanmar worker identified as Myawtan Sein was killed when he was struck by lightning.

He was walking with two friends in the middle of a plantation in Ban Nong Nam Khiaw village of tambon Mae Ku in Mae Sot district of Tak province yesterday.

In the same village, a storm felled a large tree on to a house.

The tree hit a 37-year-old woman identified as Mue Su who had taken shelter from the rain in a neighbour's house with her baby.

She is being treated for a fractured neck and broken leg at Mae Sot General Hospital. Her three-month-old baby was not injured.

In Phitsanulok, a motorcyclist was killed instantly when he hit a storm-felled tree on an unlit section of Phrom Phiram-Uttaradit Road in Ban Saphanhin village of Phrom Phiram district at 3.40am yesterday.

The rainstorm in Phitsanulok also broke billboards and brought down electrical wires, resulting in blackouts in many areas of Muang district.

In Pathum Thani province, a 100m-long section of a 2m-high wall of the Home Place housing estate in tambon Bang Phun of Muang district fell on two houses just outside the boundary of the estate at 2pm yesterday.

Sap Cha-um, 75, was injured when parts of the wall fell on to her and struck her back.

She was taken to Pathum Thani Hospital. Locals said the wall had already cracked and tilted outwards. It fell after heavy rain.

In Chiang Mai province, a storm damaged more than 560 houses and about 100 rai of cornfields in Fang district on Saturday night.

Storms damaged more than 20 houses in tambon Taluk Du of Thap Than district in Uthai Thani and about 20 houses in tambon Hua Thanon of Tha Tako district in Nakhon Sawan.

Heavy rain in Bangkok yesterday morning caused flooding in many areas, including Yaowarat.

The Meteorological Department said the storms mark the beginning of the rainy season.

The department predicts storms and hailstorms across the North over the next few days.

There was a spit of rain for a couple of minutes at my house yesterday, although the length and volume of it could have been just a bird pissing.

Here on the Eastern Front we're getting flooded out over the past 2 hours, and a huge drop in temperature. Winds and clouds heading in your direction so maybe you'll get lucky. Quick guess is 3"+ based on my fish pond which gets no roof run off, just the rain. Pete

Well, I do not know what "North" they were referring to, but I just made a round trip to the "North" (Phrae), up Tuesday and back today, and not a drop of rain in sight. Some clouds about and still stifling hot.

Well this weather in HH is oppressive.

I've never known such a dry and hot May since I've been here. :(

My condo is full of dust and dead insects too.

Pete, for gawds sake send us some rain. Perhaps it's time to send some Isaan rockets up

We had the menacing looking clouds, the thunder and lightening, but alas not a drop of rain.
