The issues about how much Chinese tourists spend is less important than where they spend it. I still recall local vendors in the north complaining that since the Chinese arrived, their sales are down. Not that would be a worry for the Government.

Anyway, surely the bigger lesson for the Thai Govt, if they have the capacity to understand and absorb it, is not to become so dependent on one source of tourists to the exclusion of all others. It's pretty fanciful for the Thai's to think that it will be business as normal again in April.

I would like to know on what each Chinese tourist spends just under 6000 baht per day ???? Even on holiday in expensive countries my husband and I don't spend that much each per day !!!

Here in Europe, I do see a lot of Chinese visitors shopping in very expensive designer boutiques, so I suppose the average spend gets driven up by the very wealthy spending large sums of money. I don't suppose any spend 6000bt a day, many spend about a 1000 and a few spend huge amounts.

Further to the above...

Coronavirus: Bicester Village 'having a tough time'

On a rainy weekday morning, the luxury shopping outlet Bicester Village feels deserted.

While February is typically a quiet time for the Oxfordshire retail village, staff the BBC spoke to said visitor numbers were much lower than usual.

Cut-price handbags and coats draw thousands of Chinese tourists to the retail outlet each year.

But the number of those diagnosed with coronavirus in China has spiked, and this has taken its toll on popular tourist destinations.

That has been my point all along. The junta's constant sucking up to China has basically shunned the rest of the world, all eggs in the same basket and now that basket has been dropped from a great height.

They're making themselves look like utter idiots, refusing the berthing of a cruise ship on virus fears then letting its passengers fly from Cambodia into Don Meuang.

No fear though, TAT will be telling us 40 million Indians are due to arrive this year, each spending 8,000 baht a day ... :duck:

I saw a Chinese group in town last night, first I've seen for a while. Approximately 40 of them leaving a massage shop and following a leader carrying a flag, in single file, towards the night market. Almost all wearing face masks. The white Coach that dropped them off at the Station just had the words "Airborne" on the back, just wondered if that stood for airborne virus....
I thought that groups were stopped on 27 Jan. and if "unofficial" groups are coming in again how are they monitored on arrival?

This allows our clever health minister to say "I told you so!" confirming his refusal to let the ship dock here. Seems very strange though. The ship was 'quarantined' at sea for 14 days. No cases were identified on board or even passing through Cambodia. This 83 year old testing positive at KL and her husband testing negative. I wonder how long after being in contact with the virus, does it show on a test. Did she contract it after the ship had berthed?

NEW CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED AS CHINESE TOURISTS ‘DROP BY 90%’
he Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) launched a campaign here on Monday to help tourism operators showcase their products and services after a massive drop in tourists coming from China.

The “Iconsiam, Thais Help Thais” campaign also included massive discounts in domestic flights, and 50 percent discount in leading hotels, food and beverages.

“The COVID-19 outbreak has reduced the number of Chinese tourists by 90 percent and the number of foreign tourists has dropped by over 60 percent,” said Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat Ratchakitprakan.

“Therefore I am calling on Thai people to spend money, shop and travel in Thailand. Thais should help Thais.”

Phiphat said the Thai government will be rolling out the “Taste Shop Spend Campaign Phase 4,” as part of the economic stimulus measures to spur a stagnant Thai economy.

I think we've established that anything from TAT can be filed in the bullshit cabinet.

Has anyone an idea how the spending of money/day for each country can be determined? Do they make a survey by asking tourists? Or do they check all money changes? Both would not give very reliable numbers.

I tried to find something about the method with Google, but this is the only hint I saw:
Thailand reeled in over $57 billion in tourism spending in 2017, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), well ahead of Japan at $34 billion, Hong Kong at $33 billion, China at $33 billion, and Taiwan at $12 billion. The Organization said that it compiled its figures from credit card spending information and recorded cash receipts.

Typical backwards Thai "thinking." When business is slowing down and you're making less money, go out and spend more. Brought to you by Loony Tunes.
