As far as I know, the beach is officially closed on Wednesdays. The original idea was Wednesday was 'cleanup day'.

Or a Thai family who will happily hibernate under the brolly's for a day before venturing out when the sun starts to set.
But I have to say that I think this is one area that needs addressing, whether in Cha am or Hua Hin, the use of patched up brolly's, half dead deck chairs and decaying sun beds does not an attraction make. I would happily support any legislation that says all this old tat should be thrown away.

Crisis deals B50bn hit to tourism
The coronavirus crisis is likely to cost Thailand at least 50 billion baht in lost tourism income associated with China's blanket ban on tourists leaving its affected cities, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand.
The estimated losses are based on the average spending of 50,000 baht per Chinese tourist visiting Thailand, council chairman Chairat Trairatttancharatphon said.
If the virus outbreak persists longer than expected, its impact on Thailand's tourism industry will be more substantial, he said.
Small and medium-sized tourism businesses would be more severely affected by the virus outbreak because they have less capital than large tourism business operators, he said.
The council is pinning its hope on the government which has been asked to come up with measures to help ease the impact of the virus on tourism, he said.

Thai hotels are preparing for another slump in bookings as the Chinese government's ban on outbound group tours inconveniences independent travellers, a segment that makes up 60% of all Chinese visitors to Thailand.
Another collapse in travellers may come from the meetings, incentives, conferences and events (Mice) segment, which draws a large portion of revenue from overseas participants.
In a meeting with the private sector on Tuesday, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will seek to devise a plan for the domestic market. Some operators are urging the government to order all state agencies to spend their budget to conduct countrywide meetings so that attendees fill hotels and provide assistance to the hospitality sector.
Supawan Tanomkieatipume, president of the Thai Hotels Association (THA), said that before the outbreak Thailand's hotels averaged 50% occupancy. Of this, the share of Chinese guests was as high as 50% as the peak season for this market got under way.
The THA expects advance bookings for February to plunge 30% as the health emergency's impact spreads to independent travellers and incentive groups.

The problem is that other nationalities will avoid Thailand now and cancel trips because it has left the doors wide open to the Chinese when others in the region have imposed travel restrictions. The junta is playing down the situation as usual, and is clearly only worried about how much money it will lose.

TAT slashes revenue target for 2020
The tourism sector is heading for its first revenue contraction in a decade as Chinese tourists, the biggest source market, remain under lockdown amid fears of a pandemic.
The coronavirus outbreak led the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to chop the 2020 revenue target to 2.91 trillion baht, after battling many negative factors since the beginning of this year.
The revised target is 3.4% lower than the 3.01 trillion baht in tourism revenue logged in 2019 and weaker than the previous target of 3.16 trillion baht.
TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said the revised target reflects the impact of the virus, with all of the agency's overseas and domestic offices using statistics and forward trends for their estimates.

Other articles tell of hundreds of tour buses growing roots, fleets of speed boats moored up, hotels already running empty etc. I would love to see what constitutes the remaining 96.6%

The implication from that article is that school field trips are included in tourist stats!
But the agency is maintaining its targets for the domestic market, which should generate 1.13 trillion baht from 172 million trips nationwide this year -- though the coronavirus has started to impact schoolchildren as field trips are cancelled to avoid possible infection in busy areas.

This weekend has brought home to me how bad things are. Monday is a holiday, so a 3 day weekend. And this is high season...
1. Went to Dreamland on Saturday. Been many times before, but never as quiet as this - even on a weekday. No queues on rides. Should have been one of the busiest weekends of the year.
2. Ice skating at ekamai on Sunday. Deserted.....
3. Airport. Monday. Departure hall (11am) very very quiet. No queue at all at check-in (Eva air). No queue at luggage check (could choose the one I wanted) and lots of bored looking immigration officers (just chose the counter I wanted !!). Literally 7 minutes from start of check-in to passing through immigration..... Never seen this in 15 years of regular in/out.
4. BKK is quiet. Shopping areas especially.
I can see a huge GDP hit in Q1. If this carries on into Q2, businesses will really hurt and could be a tipping point for the Thai economy - especially the smaller companies.
