Firstly, I too saw the wooden cabinets on the news this morning. Everybody was saying how well they worked.

I would guess the reason the giveaway has gone wrong is the likes of Tessebahn, who eventually managed to play by the rules, ran out of funds for giving food. This put a lot more desperate hungry people on the streets looking for food. If the Tessebahn were feeding 500 people twice a day, that's a lot of people searching for food. Meanwhile, what little money they had has been spent.

I've heard from my daughter that people are pushing in at these free food queues. We've discussed Thais and queuing on this forum before - they don't queue well (Mrs BB being one of the worst, although not guilty in these particular queues). I can only imagine disorder at these good will food stations will get worse.

Community pantries help virus-hit needy

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -hit-needy

“Please feel free to take anything you need, and leave anything you can share.”

A sign like the one posted above a shelf unit outside a Toyota Sure showroom on Mittraphap Highway in Muang district of Khon Kaen can now be seen in several locations in the country, as people help one another make ends meet after the coronavirus has crippled the economy.

In the community pantry in Khon Kaen are essential items like instant noodles, bottled water, eggs, canned fish and basic medicines.

The new sharing scheme follows the free meals offered by temples and other donors to people left hungry by the pandemic shutdown.

It's not clear exactly when the first community pantry appeared in Thailand. The idea has been seen in other countries, including the United Kingdom, as a way to help people who have lost their income to feed their families during this difficult period.

The roadside cupboard in Khon Kean was set up on Saturday by Kulwadee Theswong, who also bought items to fill it up. Ms Kulwadee said she bought it from a furniture shop in the municipality and the owner gave her a discount of 400 baht from the price tag of 2,200 baht when she told him what it was for.

“I saw community pantries in other provinces and wanted to have one here in Khon Kaen,” she said.

Ms Kulwadee received permission from the auto showroom to place it outside the premises as it would be seen by many passers-by. The showroom also posed a security guard to take care of the pantry, with manager Chokchai Khunwasee saying: “We are proud to be part of this sharing effort.”

Pantries have been placed in several locations around Bangkok, four on Saturday by a volunteer group calling itself Little Brick.

Nakhon Ratchasima has at least one pantry in the Mittaphap community in Muang district. It was initiated by community leader Anuwat Ploedjanthuek after he saw people in the area thrown out of the jobs by Covid-19.

“Workers living in 500 houses in the community were left unemployed. They have no jobs and no money,” he said of his motivation to set up the food-sharing project.

Community pantries have also appeared in Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Social media users have posted pictures of other roadside pantries in such provincesas Saraburi, Roi Et and Chiang Mai.

“It really helps me and my family get something to eat during this difficult time,” Chet Sipromma, 65, an unemployed turner said as he was taking some items from the pantry in Khon Kaen. “I wish all donors prosperity and happiness,” he added.

Wiwet Chuchorhor, 64, spent some of her retirement funds on instant noodles, bags of rice, milk and water for the pantry in Nakhon Ratchasima on Sunday. “Sharing with those suffering is a way to make merit,” she said.

They appear to be working very well and civilised. Really surprised not to see queues of people waiting. Why is that? Anyway, I'm impressed by the pics.

The food banks in the UK are somewhat different. Like charities, they use premises that are currently not used for anything else. They're almost like mini-supermarkets.
My son spends a lot of his time either helping to man one of these food banks or out delivering food parcels to the needy. Prior to the pandemic he was doing shifts at homes for the 'homeless'.
He's on a mission, he says, to pay back all the bad behaviour in his past life!!
He sent me pics and looking at these 'food banks' there is literally tons of food available. All donated I assume.

Community pantries expand to 43 provinces

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -provinces

The new phenomenon of the "community pantry", also known as "pantry of sharing", is rapidly increasing as Thais continue to donate daily necessities items to people affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Community pantries were found in 43 provinces on Monday, a surge from 21 on Sunday. The central region, including Bangkok, led the pack with 16 provinces, followed by 16 in the northeastern region, seven each in the North and South, and three in the eastern areas.

The number was compiled by Supakit Kulchartvijit, who has asked people who set up a roadside cupboard or spot one to take a picture and send it to his Facebook page so he can update the figures.

“Does your province have a community pantry?” he asked in a post on his page on Monday.

Mr Supakit, an independent business consultant, has joined a volunteer group called Little Brick to promote community pantries around the country.

He first floated the idea on his Facebook page on Thursday, and his team then set up the first five roadside cupboards -- four in Bangkok and one in Rayong. The sharing campaign has gone viral and inspired copycat cupboards, including the one in Muang district of Khon Kaen.

Typical items inside are rice, fruit juice, milk, eggs, instant noodles and water.

Mr Supakit said there was no need for people to flock to the pantries created by his team. Anyone can set up a pantry in their community, he said, on the principle of collective ownership.

“The community pantry has no ownership. Once it is set up, it belongs to that community,” he wrote. “None of the items belong to us once we put them in the pantry.”

He suggested fresh food should not be put in a pantry as it quickly spoil.

Monks, police and soldiers have joined ordinary people in setting up pantries in their locations.

Pol Lt Col Nongluck Promrit, a superintendent of Plien police station in Sichon district of Nakhon Si Thammarat, said on Sunday she bought a cupboard for 3,000 baht and spent another 500 baht on items to stock the pantry. Other people who saw it outside her house had kept it filled since then, she added.

Resorts close to Bangkok first to recover
As Thailand starts to look at a purposive resumption of domestic travel, the beach resort of Hua Hin, south of the Thai capital is well poised to capture pent-up demand due to the old adage; ‘location, location, location’.

That’s one of the observations in C9Hotelworks’ latest hotel market update focusing on Hua Hin.

With the current Covid-19 crisis moving forward and tourism remains on the cusp, nearby destinations within an easy drive from Bangkok appear to have a clear-cut advantage in seeing travel re-opening. Both overnight stays and day trips look to be the agents of change in the short-term.

In the newly released report Hua Hin Hotel Market Update from C9 Hotelworks, the findings conclude that the bottom line for the destination’s international tourism ambitions is inseparably linked to the current airport expansion plan.

Looking back, Hua Hin has continued its journey down a sustainable path of tourism visitor arrivals with a 5-year CAGR of 6%. Despite the upward trajectory, last year 74% of visitors came from the domestic sector.

In other words, the Bangkok weekend warriors will be back first!

It appears that these 'Community Pantries' are developing almost as expected. These cupboards are being stripped by masked citizens, some selling the produce on. There have been fights breaking outside the one at the Tessabahn. Such a shame. Although I voiced my concerns earlier, I actually thought that for once an initiative such as this was going to work.

Perceived mindsets are not going to change after all.

As we heard restaurants were reopening we thought we would go out for a meal yesterday evening, unfortunately all the restaurants we looked at were closed, soi 94, along canal road to name a few places, and the ones which were opened only offered take away so went back towards Cha Am and ended up at the "Steak House" on petchkasem road lhs after the army camp where we enjoyed a great fish & chips.
Sadly Hua Hin looked very ghostly as obviously no tourists

The restaurant my daughter works in, and although the owner is still paying her 50% salary, he's told her that it's pointless opening until travel restrictions and alcohol bans are truly lifted. "I would just lose more money by opening without customers. It's cheaper to remain closed for the time being".
In the meantime he will continue paying half her salary.

Yes agree, that's what we thought, fully understand the reason why they are closed

I don't know WTF is going on. I'm just back from my weekly shopping trip. Driving home via a friend's house, we've seen a Thai eatery doing roaring business with at least 50 people seated (certainly no social distancing), a gym open and a bar in full swing - certainly people sat at tables and pool being played. Couldn't see if alcohol was being served.

Might as well post on here, unless a better place for them comes to mind?

Bluport are gearing up to re-open and The Mall Group, part owners, have issued a couple of videos abut what to expect. Hope it's okay to post these? In addition all staff have to go for medical tests (Mall staff covered by company insurance scheme). And if you buy any prepared food from Gourmet Market and God forbid, you get the trots or whatever, don't chuck the label away - it identifies who prepared the food!

Not sure everything in these vids will be seen at Bluport. but the screens are already in place at Gourmet Market and staff now wear masks and full face screens and gloves.
