Re: Movies on DVD

Post by hhfarang »

I'm not normally a fan of French films, or even international films, but this one I enjoyed:

District 13: Ultimatum

It has all the requirements of an action film, plus the "government conspiracy against the poor gang neighborhood" (except for the French Pres himself, he was simply misled by advisers).

For you CTs or U.S. Capitalism haters, it even briefly portrays Halliburton as the evil company in league with the evil French government advisers and military leaders.

It's set in future Paris where the city is divided into districts and 13 is the district controlled and populated by gangs; and it is very politically correct with Latin, African, Eastern European (Nazi skinhead), Asian, and even middle eastern gangs represented. It is worth watching alone just to see the hot tattooed female leader of the Asian gang (although she wore a skin colored mostly ill fitting body suit to cover up all the good stuff), but other than that, the action is pretty good including a fair amount of realistic (non CGI I think) parkour skills represented.

While sometimes predictable and unbelievable, the plot was ok and it was one of the best French action films I have seen (which isn't many). I didn't know any of the actors, but I'm sure a few of them are famous in France or Europe. Filming quality and direction was very good if you like fighting, shooting, and car chase action scenes and explosions.

For me, definitely not a waste of two hours!

Fair! I downloaded the torrent from kickass.

I don't think it was a hand held cam version, to good for that, maybe some copy made somewhere. No foreign languages either.

I watched on the laptop, didn't know where the wife left the cable to the TV, and it was good. The fight scenes a little difficult to follow, but that was also due to screen size!

I like films that are unspecific about some of the plot and leave things open to your interpretation. Thats why I loved the Spanish version of REC and hated its simplified for a kegger jock audience US remake QUARANTINE. However, sometimes artsy directors just go too far, and VANISHING ON 7TH STREET is well in that category...just an empty bag of air.

During a blackout most of the population of Detroit dissappear, leaving behind piles of clothes. The ones left behind, as they were in independant light sources such as candles, struggle to understand what has happened, seemingly persued by sentient "shadows" that attack survivors and dissappear them. They gather in a bar, and one by one fall victim to the shadows.

However, theres no context at all in the film, no hint of what the hell is going on. Not even enough for your brain to suggest a possible explaination. So...some genuinely creepy possibilities in the plot remain shadows and mist, and by the non event of an ending you are just wondering what the hell????

Its a shame as it could have done better, and failed at the main hurdles, falling as flat as a pancake. Not recommended.

Utter fail.

well mate if you are from Motown you will enjoy the latest blood splattered car chase flick starring Nicolas Cage.... DRIVE ANGRY

The best way of describing this would be a high speed wreck between GONE IN 60 SECONDS and CONSTANTINE, as it is basically one long car chase in late 60s muscle cars with demonic overtones on the radio.

When a crazed Satan worshipping cult leader kills his daughter and kidnaps his grandchild with the intention of sacrificing her on the full moon, John Milton (fnar) fires up his Chevelle from Hell and breaks out of Old Nicks lockup for the damned. He hits the road to track down the cult, knowing full well that if they succeed the gates of hell will be opened, and Earth becomes just an annex of his former home. Theres also the little matter of The Accountant to deal with - Satans own soul stealing debt collecter, who is a bit miffed Johnny's broken out, and intends putting him back before the boss notices he's missing.

Its a full speed nitro ride with bags of guts n splattery glory thrown around with aplomb, and as cliched as the script may be its done well and throws in a few dead mens curves to keep you watching. Brain dead fun it may be, and Saturday night beer n pretzels material all the way, but its a fun ride all the same and I liked it a lot.

Out and about in lovely DVDRIP format now, and a definite recc for a lazy night in.

Its a three beers in your enemies skull keeper

Early warning system alerts abound on THOR, SUCKER PUNCH and PRIEST....still all copies about are in bloody awful CAM versions so buy at your peril...as all three are eye candy CGI fests its as pointless as sticking your willy in a blender.

Out next week - PIRATES 4 is in cinemas on the 20th and looks excellent. Critics that are having a swipe at it are all donkey raping choad wifflers so ignore their petty spite...when you can you write or make, when you cant you become a critic. PIRATES rocks...End of.

I love old film noir from the Bogey days but when it comes to the modern equivalent, Neo-Noir, Im always a bit cautious because for every CHINATOWN theres a JACK FALLS...some half assed dog n pony show that tries to be stylish and cool but fails completely.

That isnt the case with THE BIG BANG, Antonio Banderas' latest outing in film. Antonio plays the classic gumshoe caught up in a tangled web of intrigue involving a 7 foot psycho boxer who has just been released from prison, 30 million dollars in hot diamonds, and a classic femme fatale. Throw in a bag of iffy cops, a mad recluse genius in search of the God Particle and a cast of clues and leads that somehow all keep ending up dead and its a twisted Caddilac ride into noir land, all delivered with a dash of style and fancy pants eye candy cinematography.

The thing that makes a noir film though is the storyline and its labyrinthine twists, and this one has more than the average garden maze with blind leads and offshoots a plenty....and you will not work out what the hell is going on till the final act. So...it works. Thats what these films are meant to do...keep you guessing till the final act.

Its a great example of neo-noir thats done with respect to the genre, and is a well deserved three shots of bourbon and a shot from a 45 keeper all the way.

Out in lovely DVDRIP at VeeHD.com and Oneclickmoviez.com and all over the net like a bad suit on a punch drunk bouncer.

Ok....a sort of film come two part epic TV special rework of a classic movie from the days of "Cast of Thousands".... BEN HUR

This is a two part TV version of the classic Charlton Heston film and done with a younger cast, although in amongst them are names like Ray Winstone grizzling along as Judah's mentor Quintus Arius. Its also done on a much smaller budget, so in place of the cast of thousands we have CGI computer graphics and although it follows the original in its main plot lines it throws in a couple of more up to date twists and side arcs. The battle scene and eponymous chariot race may be CGI heavy but they work, and thats what counts.

Its competantly done and well worth a watch, and can be found out and about on the net in two parts at oneclickmoviez.com, veehd.com and all manner of torrents. It may not have the true epic feel of the Heston original, but despite that the quality is good and its a worthy keeper.

BLOODRAYNE 3 - THE THIRD REICH

oh bugger.... it had Soooooo much promise. Foxy goth vampires in clingy outfits doing a slice n dice with big swords; a tasty cast of side minxes; my favorite bad guys...comic book Nazis; a mad scientist Nazi....so much promise.

Then, in horror, you see in the opening credits the name that scuppered a thousand scripts....Uwe Boll!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!!!!

And this is a typical Uwe film...crappy script, bad acting, cardboard sets, two bob budget, and as usual it completely desecrates the genre it takes on. Uwe is like some Anti-Midas of film directors...whatever he touches turns to crap.

Bloodrayne 1 was an excellent neo-vamp film, Bloodrayne 2 a cheapo spin off set in teh Wild West..... then this is a big pile of steamy poodle poo with that stupid kraut mullet head Boll gurning above it dumps itself in your lap.

Seriously....

here is a picture of the twonk

If you should run into him simply reach for the nearest blunt or sharp object and beat him to death with it before he ruins any more film franchises.

God damn you Boll! God damn you to hell!

Avoid like a dose of clap. Watching it made me cry

Actually heard good things about that from an LFC forum I frequent, especially the lesbian scene between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis.

The Trailers for the final Harry Potter film are out and about on the interweb, so I thought Id post one here so you can see....looks like it will be a CGI powered eye candy blitzkrieg that ends the series on a bang rather than a whimper. Im looking forward to it at least

Here we go...strap in
