Re: Thailand tourist slump continues

i had been in TH (HuaHin) from end-Nov until mid-Dec.2018

https://huahinforum.com/viewtopic.php?f ... 74#p482174
maybe it's the (for me) very significant drop in tourists, especially European tourists,

on my flight now at the end of Nov. from DUS via AUH to BKK the (Etihad) plane had about 30% - 40% empty seats

and currently in HuaHin one sees clearly less tourists both on the streets and
much less in the hotels.

This then leads to long faces at smaller retailers and small service providers

high season - does not look like, yet

Note the paragraph below in bold. A wishful spin, or a possibility? Let's see when it's hot and rainy here and hot and rainy in China as well.

Chinese can’t resist Thailand’s ‘Teflon’ tourism
Breaking News March 03, 2019 12:25
By The Thaiger http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/ ... s/30365098

After Thailand temporarily faded in popularity with Chinese holiday makers, they returned in huge numbers again in January – 3.7 million tourists in all.

This was a nearly 5-per-cent rise from the same month last year. Mainland China continues to be the main source of foreigners visiting Thailand, with just over a million arrivals in January, a 9.3-per-cent increase year-on-year and an astonishing 20-per-cent hike from December.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports says the Kingdom is “firming up of the new normal”, in which the distinction between what used to be the high and low seasons has mostly vanished as the visitor mix diversifies and Thailand evolves into a year-round tourism destination.

The turnaround, following last July’s boating accident in Phuket in which 47 Chinese vacationers drowned, is significant, making the Thai tourist industry seem like Teflon – invulnerable to serious damage.

After that summer tragedy, negative social media and ill-conceived comments from Thai leaders caused a significant drop in Chinese arrivals, particularly in Phuket, where bookings fell between 20 and 50 per cent in various hotel sectors.

Six Chinese airlines cancelled flights to Phuket for lack of demand.

Among non-Asian arrivals, Russia retains its place as Thailand’s largest source market, with 229,518 arrivals in January, a small rise year-on-year.

German, French, Finnish and Swedish arrivals declined between 3.5 and 14.6 per cent.

Arrivals from Britain and Norway increased by better than 3 per cent in the same month.Three Eastern European countries – Poland, Kazakhstan and Ukraine – also registered arrivals over 100,000 visitors and increases in numbers compared to 12 months ago.

Arrivals from the United States and Canada also rose.

Australian visitors dropped 1.5 per cent and New Zealand visitors 5.7 per cent. The number of Australian visitors to Thailand has been consistent for almost 20 years, never rising or falling much despite the changes in fortune for the Australian dollar versus the baht.

One of the big improvers, and increasingly important feeder market, is Indian tourism.

January saw a rise of nearly 25 per cent compared to the year before. It is projected that Indian tourism will continue to rise throughout this year.

The ministry forecasts 41.1 million foreign tourists for 2019, with China, other Southeast Asian countries and Europe contributing rises this year.

I got the impression this year's high season has ended earlier today.

I went into my bank in Market Village at 11:10, expecting a 30 minute wait. The bank was deserted (something I've never known at that time in the morning). Later, we went for lunch in the downstairs food hall. We've been several times this year, and have always struggled to find a seat at lunchtime. Today, it was less than half full.

Maybe it's all just coincidence i.e. there are still plenty of Farangs walking about, but these are 2 places I expect to be very busy, but they weren't.

Also, last night I had a rare trip to a bar - always busy, but last night was about 1/3rd full. Maybe it's just switch over day, but something has drastically changed.

I flew into Swampy yesterday lunchtime and it was as busy as I have ever seen. Full airport bus running an hour late due to traffic, no seats on earlier buses. With all the thousands of properties being built, I just think people are more spread out and eat/drink locally where it is cheaper.

Maybe you're right, maybe I was lucky, but all 3 places I have mentioned have been very busy at that time of day quite a few times this year. I can but hope :D

Flew out of Don Meuang earlier this week and check in and immigration took well over an hour, the place was rammed. 90% Asians though and 80% of those were Chinese, you could almost count the farangs.

In Laos at the moment and it is the opposite, the place is packed and it is 90% westerners. Thailand doesn't seem to want them any more anyway.

I arrived this week and went around town last night. It was not as busy as I would have expected. Someone mentioned they think some of the girls are taking time off with bars closing to go home and maybe vote??
Could this be a factor?
Still plenty or European couples around

Maybe the name of the thread should change to "Hua Hin tourist slump continues"....down here, the southern tourist hotspots are packed. Has been since December and no sign of stopping, even more with Easter being after Songkran this year. Here in Krabi national tourism is quite small compared to Scandinavians, German-speaking, British, Chinese, Indian, Australians, etc. Phuket the same, hotels are doing well. It does make a difference to have an International Airport that actually operates international flights.

Well anyway....

Cheers,
B.

Really?? I'm not doubting you Blacky because your report will be a lot more reliable than anything reported officially in this country. Back in December, I was reading stories about tumbleweed in the streets of resorts down South, while at the same time TAT reported Hua Hin as 'full'. As I thought, maybe a clever marketing ploy to get people to the Southern resorts.

PKK municipality, seems to have a wee bit more tourist, white skinned, non tanned, strolling around.

Asians, unknown nationality, unless standing next to them, as can usually pick out Japanese, but can't tell the difference of Chinese, Koreans talking. And they seem to arrive in groups / vans, where whitey is usual a couple or family, along with a few single guys, occasionally in pairs, so maybe not 'single'.

Still low key tourist town. Lively at night, and hard to tell who is who, locals / Asian tourist or expats, unless non tanned. The usual 10-20 familiar expat faces, though I'm more out and about during daytime.

Thanks Big Boy, the first half of December is usually quieter in Thailand in general and high season kicks in around the 20th. Beginning of December is also the end of the rain season down here which naturally draws back the crowds. As it is with all statistics "the only statistics you can trust are those you falsified yourself". And to be fair we have to take Chinese incident out of the 2018 equation. Ever since CNY 2019, the numbers have been back on par compared to the last years with a slight increase at my two properties.

Talking about statistics, I just looked at the Immigration Arrival 2018 at Krabi International Airport which certainly shows an increase (excl. China) in 2018 vs. 2017 for certain markets (British +42.7%, France 47.86%, Denmark 83.77%, Norway 222.97(!)%. Now these are either "new" tourists to LOS or are missing in other Thai tourist destinations. Norway started a direct flight to Krabi which can be seen in the arrival numbers, Qatar Airways has a direct flight from Doha which connects major European cities through their flight network. It makes a difference in the travel behavior....

Cheers,
B.

I'm glad that Hua Hin has so little to attract tourists. If they want night life they go to Bangkok, beaches + night life, go South, mountains, jungles, tribal life, go North. If I didn't live here and was a tourist I'd never come here. It's the lack of tourist stuff that attracts me to Hua Hin.

good point, handdrummer. We read about the huge influx of Chinese and Indian tourists to HH, but see almost none of this in HH.

Don't think HH would be in my top 50 Thai places to visit, coming to Thailand from overseas.

Top 7 provinces visited, and top 3 nationalities visiting: Image
