https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
I noted from this site that it took 7 days to reach 1 million cases from 500k.
It's now taken 6 days to reach 1.5m.

It took 7 days to increase by 100% (500,000 to 1,000,000) and then 6 days for that number to increase by 50% (1m to 1.5m), so the rate is decreasing!!

Maths was never my strong point but 500,000 to 1 million equals 500,00 7 days
1 million to 1,500,000 is an increase of 500,000 in 6 days.
Am I missing something?

When the BBC give out the statistics they normally talk about the rate of increase rather than actual numbers, so if you take the baseline number on any given day and compare it to a new number in the future, they say it has increased by x% over y days.
Of course you can use numbers how you like, but I do believe that the rate of increase is a particularly relevant one and in this case shows that the rate of increase is actually reducing compared to before

Sorry Dannie I was using hard figures from Worldmeters. If you think the infection rate is slowing that's up to your interpretation which kind of differs from mine.

Well as I said, you can use numbers in a variety of ways depending on whether you’re trying to make a particular point and of course I’m not trying to make any specific point. Having said that, if you have say 100 cases today and in 3 days time you have 200 cases, that’s an increase of 100, and expressed as a percentage, a 100% increase. Now if in a further 3 days time, there’s another 100 cases, the new number is 300, but the percentage increase is only 50%, so the statisticians would claim that the rate of increase is reducing. Anyway that’s my last mention on this particular subject.

HeHe. Now let's see how bored I am!
Using Danny's % increases/decreases, note this:
1,000 cases that increased by 50% (+500) gives 1,500
1,500 cases that increased by 45% (+675) gives 2,175
2,175 cases that increased by 40% (+870) gives 3,045
3,045 cases that increased by 35% (+1,065) gives 4,110
4,110 cases that increased by 30% (+1,223) gives 5,333
The rate of increase is seen to drop but the picture is not good!
The problem is you are not comparing percentages based on a constant but an ever changing number.
You could argue that the growth in the world population is measured in percentages. i.e. a past increase of 5% is now down to 4%
It's about context.
And just for fun. 'half full' and 'half empty' is grammatically incorrect. 'full' and 'empty' are absolutes and as an absolute, cannot be modified.
That was fun. Now how shall I fill the next 15 mins.......
