Since we're on 'firsts', who was the first King of all England?

I would hazard a guess at that Willy the conker player but realistically probably someone later.

That would have been my answer, but apparently it was his grandson Athelstan.

Most of us will know that the game of rugby originated at Rugby school when William Webb Ellis decided to pick up the ball and run with it, but can anyone tell me the year?

Actually came up recently as the RWC in France will be the 200th anniversary of the event..... So, it would have to be 1823.dtaai-maai wrote: ↑Sat Nov 21, 2020 4:49 am <sigh> Alright, most of us will know that the modern game of rugby as we know it originated at Rugby school when William Webb Ellis decided to pick up the ball and run with it, but can anyone tell me the year?

Re: History Challenge & Journal
Not really a challenge, unless you choose to make it one...
The question would be: What do you think this is? (It's about the size of a cricket ball)
Not really a challenge because nobody knows the answer to this question, though there are some interesting theories in this article.

I love this sort of thing. I once bought an old wooden one-drawer filing cabinet at a local auction and tucked away in the back was a letter written during World War One. It was just family gossip and speculation on where Johnny might be fighting, but it was beautifully written and there was something special about coming across it so many years later. I was doing a lot of family research at the time and meant to track down the descendants of the writer or recipient, but I never got round to it, and the letter and cabinet were lost when my house was destroyed in the "Great Storm" of 1987.

Close enough. Laid between 1800 - 1820 they were part of the initial water delivery system for the city of Philadelphia. They were lost to time and not found again until 1955 while they were building a new sewer system. The wood was still rock hard and fit for purpose.
