You missed the clue in my response above... It's not very subtle so I'll just get this question out of the way - Don Quixote.

"The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, or just Don Quixote, is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. It was published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615. A founding work of Western literature, it is often labeled "the first modern novel" and many authors consider it to be the best literary work ever written."

What about Decameron?
Decameron is a collection of novellas by the 14th-century Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio (1313–1375).

Or doesn't it count as a novel in English language?

Don't get picky on me, BG, I was very careful not to make a definitive statement!
Perhaps the Decameron is more like the Canterbury Tales, i.e. a collection of short stories (although Chaucer wrote in rhyme, of course).

Or are you just desperate to win the bonus prize...?

Nah, don't need extra points in this one, could you give me some in FPL, please. :D

BTW, I think, the oldest book I've read is by Julius Ceasar, "The Gallic Wars" but that's a history book, not a novel.

My knowledge on the monarchy is pretty dire  , so I can even get close....

I do know William the Conqueror is buried in Normandy 1080/90'ish(?), but I suspect you're looking for a slightly more recent date than that :D

I'm assuming not too obvious, so perhaps the spouse of a (then) reigning monarch? Also assume you can't include Bonnie Prince Charlie (still somewhat early I take it).....

I think you must be thinking of Edward VIII/Duke of Windsor. He died in Paris but was interred in Windsor Castle.

It's a king I'm referring to. As a clue, he was buried in Hanover.
Quite a few centuries after William and a couple before Edward VIII.

And for a bonus point: What is generally considered to be the first European novel and when was it published?
I just stumbled across this article about early novels so thought I’d post it here
