I keep thinking about the stat I read the other day...

That 95% of reported cases have either no symptoms or very mild ones (like having a cold)

Of the remaining 5%, the majority of those 1 out of 20 will have moderate symptoms. And the minority will have more serious symptoms of which some will require an ICU.

I'm not sure what conclusions I draw from this but a little perspective is never a bad thing.

Also, with the Thai government suddenly mobilising re field hospitals and hospitels it makes me wonder whether they already know what's coming. And that they may have known for sometime.

You don't say where you got those figures. According to the CDC though, their best estimate for the percentage of asymptomatic cases is 30%.

The current worldwide case fatality rate (you can work it out from any site giving global statistics) is over 2%. In some countries it's much higher. It's 9% in Mexico, for instance.

Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by the relatively positive statistics from a couple of countries - right at the moment this disease is racking up more cases per day worldwide, than it ever has since this pandemic first started.

The number of worldwide cases has doubled in the last two months and the rate of increase is still accelerating.

To be honest, the government was caught totally by surprise by this pandemic. Anutin is a political appointee as a reward for the party he controls joining in coalition with the main majority party. Public Health in normal times has little to do or worry about, and the post is arguably the least challenging of them all. Surprise, surprise one morning when Covid hit and he's in charge and in over his head. Wrong time, wrong place and wrong person. He should bow out gracefully and I'm sure there's a spot for him in the cabinet that could use the business and engineering skills he has.

I don't think any of the generals or their minions will step down voluntarily regardless of what the people want - another coup will be the only way to get rid of them. Anyway, back to this ...

Public Health Ministry mulls new lockdown
The Public Health Ministry has proposed "targeted lockdown" measures and a new colour-coding system to identify provinces most at risk of the latest Covid-19 outbreak.

Dr Kiattiphum Wongrajit, permanent secretary of the ministry, said on Sunday the Public Health Emergency Operation Centre called an urgent meeting in response to the severity of the latest wave of Covid-19.

Thailand yesterday logged 11 new deaths, a record high that included a pregnant woman, raising the toll to 140. The government recorded 2,438 new coronavirus cases, all but five contracted locally, bringing the accumulated total since the pandemic began to 55,460.

He said it was agreed at the meeting that disease control measures will be tightened with zoning based on a revised colour-coding system to identify provinces hit by Covid-19.

Currently, red, orange, yellow and green are used to illustrate the degree of Covid-19 infections in provinces affected by the disease.

The red zone means maximum control and a high number of infections; the second-highest control zone is orange, followed by the high surveillance zone (yellow) while the surveillance zone (green) applies to provinces without infection.

Under the new colour-coding system, there will be only three zones -- dark red under special, maximum control, red and orange to respond to the current situation, Dr Kiattiphum said.

Looks like PKK has dropped out of the top ten so may slip into the middle category.

In the UK Covid counties were given 'Tier' numbers - In Thailand, colours.
In the UK, banks have names - in Thailand the banks identify with colours.

Even days of the week have colours!

It's part of their superstitious, religious, beliefs and goes back to China and probably India. Nothing to do with Buddha or Buddhism.

I guess this is a warning to those who are accidentally getting locked in to back rooms of bars, or are holding private parties at the moment. It is illegal, with a 2 years imprisonment penalty. (if you get caught of course :wink)

I wonder if the same applies to predominantly Thai gatherings? I know of 2 Thai households where parties are almost nightly. Additionally, my son had a few friends around a couple of nights ago - he certainly didn't realise he was breaking the law. As I keep saying, "Confusion reigns."

I've used the phrase, "Confusion reigns," recently. It is because all instructions are basically 1 liners, and open to misinterpretation.

Again, today I counted the number of non-mask wearing adults around Khao Tao Lake. There were 26 today, and I was chuckling to myself, thinking that's another 520,000฿ the BIB have lost out on, whilst quietly congratulating myself on being a good egg. Then, I read this Tweet:

We've already seen the Pattaya residents arrested for doing what they thought was legal. Again, it seems my household was also at risk.

Its Thailand mate - every province is different and the "police" are a law unto themselves.

Just seen a report on Thai news about people being fined 500 baht for not wearing masks and posting their fines on farcebook. Again, province/city-specific with some enforcing and others not.

Nothing like a good bit of consistency and communication to solve a problem eh - all part of the Generalissimo's plan to absolve himself from any responsibility by sending us deeper into this quagmire.

Thailand adds 2,048 Covid cases, 8 deaths Monday

Thailand on Monday logged eight additional Covid-related deaths and 2,048 new cases.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration said only 10 of the new cases were imported.

Half of the eight fatalities were registered in Bangkok, it said.

Bangkok logged most new cases at 901, followed by Samut Prakan (110), Chon Buri (104), Nonthaburi (97) and Chiang Mai (84).

The capital is the hotbed of the third outbreak that started early this month with 9,076 accumulated cases, almost three times higher than Chiang Mai, which stayed second.

CCSA assistant spokeswoman Apisamai Srirangson said Bangkok will continue to log more than 500 new cases per day as a result of active mass testing deployed by health authorities.

The imported cases were four recent arrivals from India and one each from the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, China, Turkey, Hungary and Qatar.
