'New Thai variant' risk, warns top virologist
A prominent virologist has warned that efforts to contain Covid-19 must be intensified before a "Thai variant" mutation of the virus emerges.

Dr Yong Poovorawan, chief of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at Chulalongkorn University, posted on his Facebook page that concerned agencies should step up measures against Covid-19 due to the particularly contagious nature of the British variant currently spreading across the nation.

"Proactive measures to keep Covid-19 from spreading widely are needed before the virus has a chance to mutate," he said.

The virus usually took hold in big cities first before spreading to smaller towns, districts, sub-districts and villages.

Limiting people's movements was one of the solutions to stop the pandemic, the doctor said.

A Thai version of Covid - only infectious between 2pm and 5pm and after dark, is far more dangerous to farangs, needs ten copies of your passport to be treated, costs way more to cure than regular Covid, and takes a holiday every two weeks.

That 95% of reported cases have either no symptoms or very mild ones (like having a cold)

Of the remaining 5%, the majority of those 1 out of 20 will have moderate symptoms. And the minority will have more serious symptoms of which some will require an ICU.

I'm not sure what conclusions I draw from this but a little perspective is never a bad thing.

Also, with the Thai government suddenly mobilising re field hospitals and hospitels it makes me wonder whether they already know what's coming. And that they may have known for sometime.

Thailand on Sunday logged 11 new deaths, a record high that included a pregnant woman, raising the toll to 140. The government recorded 2,438 new coronavirus cases, all but five contracted locally, bringing the accumulated total of confirmed cases since the pandemic began to 55,460.

Although the number of new infections logged by the government during the 24-hour period ending at 11.59pm on Saturday was lower than the previous day, the Covid-related body count broke the record for the second consecutive day after Saturday’s toll of eight.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said the deceased included a 32-year-old woman in Bangkok who was 25-weeks pregnant.

Medical records of underlying diseases such as obesity were found for all but two of the victims.

Bangkok registered the highest number of new confirmed cases -- 1,078 -- followed by 163 in Chiang Mai, 115 in Nonthaburi, 77 in Samut Prakan and 75 in Chon Buri.

The five imported cases were three new arrivals from the United Arab Emirates, one from Egypt and one from India.

CCSA spokesman Taweesilp Visanuyothin said the third wave of the pandemic in Thailand has now accumulated more infections that the second outbreak that ran from mid-December last year to March this year. The outbreak that that spread from entertainment venues early this month has now produced 26,597 cases in 25 days, compared with 24,626 in the previous outbreak.

The new wave has now killed 46 people, compared with 34 in the previous outbreak triggered by a cluster at the Central Shrimp Market in Muang district of Samut Sakhon., according to the spokesman.

You don't say where you got those figures. According to the CDC though, their best estimate for the percentage of asymptomatic cases is 30%.

The current worldwide case fatality rate (you can work it out from any site giving global statistics) is over 2%. In some countries it's much higher. It's 9% in Mexico, for instance.

Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by the relatively positive statistics from a couple of countries - right at the moment this disease is racking up more cases per day worldwide, than it ever has since this pandemic first started.

The number of worldwide cases has doubled in the last two months and the rate of increase is still accelerating.

Another thing to bear in mind about this is that as time goes on, it is becoming more and more apparent that even people with mild cases are suffering from long term side effects and an increased risk of death (up to 50% higher than flu patients, for instance).

According to a paper just published from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis:

"Our study demonstrates that up to six months after diagnosis, the risk of death following even a mild case of COVID-19 is not trivial and increases with disease severity"

They don't say whether the unborn baby survived. At 25 weeks it has a very good chance of survival. But..... TIT.
