would you frequent a great steakhouse(meat from aussie)..

Restaurants, food, beverage, hawkers, and local markets and suppliers. This is the place for discussion on Hua Hin's culinary options.

So, Aberdeen Angus is Scottish beef but Welsh Black is English beef? I must check my post code. I'm sure those are Welsh Black cattle in the fields near my house but I didn't realise I was living in England, not Wales, all along!

Spot on image - IMO only a poor quality steak is used for slow cooking. Yes - it can be the most tasty - but for a grilled steak you need a premium cut which can take grilling and still come out edible - which is rare if you will pardon the pun.
Sirloin grills well because it is marbled, but overcook it and IMO you end up with same old same old shoe leather. Personally I like a 2 inch thick fillet steak with an inch of blood in the middle, which can only be achieved by home cooking. A big problem with grilled steak served in restauarants is that the meat continues to cook when taken off the heat, so is very difficult to judge how it will be when it reaches the table.

You're very lucky that money is not a factor in your appreciation of food, but if you are prepared to pay US$400 for a steak I'm inclined to think you may have more money than sense!
Hi DM

Maybe I came over a little pom-pose

If a steak tastes mediocre, but only costs THB50, this does not make it wonderful. Good is good, regardless of cost (high or low). That was my only point.

Yes, I've eaten $400 Steaks in Bangkok, its not a frequent thing, I can count how many times in the last 10 years on one hand. You maybe right about the more money than sense, sadly, most of the time I seem to have little of either.

So, if I'm reading this correctly, you paid roughly 12,000 baht for a steak? If so, then allow me to help you......

1) Veal is better than beef
2) You can buy newly born bulls for roughly 500 baht each
3) You can hire a top class butcher to carve them up for a few hundred baht.
4) You can hire a top class chef for a night at around 2000 baht

So, the next time you're about to order your steak, just think that you could have more than 100 veal steaks cooked to perfection for the same price.

Seriously though, NO steak in the world is worth $400 US. :tsk: :tsk: :tsk:

I presumed it was Thai beef at them prices?

BTW, Papaya works a treat for tenderising beef if you're cooking at home.

You just had to go and share this with the world didn't you? :thumb:

You're absolutely right, and it works just as well when cooking Thai chickens. Whenever I've tried Thai chickens in Isaan, the meat is as tough as an old boot, but when my MIL cooks them here, she uses the papaya trick and the meat is as tender as ever.

BTW, the white sap that oozes out of green papaya if you cut them is actually used for making meat tenderizer. Obviously they dry it out and convert it into a powder.

I wouldn't trust any beef at the open markets not to have worms.

I've been eating beef from the open markets since 1997 and have never yet had any problems. I also eaten it raw hundreds of times already since I enjoy the Isaan style beef laab. Awesome with some sticky rice while having a few beers or Sangsoms. :thumb:

Admittedly, we have been getting all our beef and chicken from the new Makro since they opened, but only because it's more convenient. Pork we get from the pork butcher in town.

Veal is NOT beef, even in SA if I recall; and if you try to cook it like beef you will probably end up throwing it away! :neener:

All very interesting, Takiap

Appreciate your thoughts and suggestions, but most of the time hardly appropriate, a little extreme. when all you want to do is eat some beef, don't you think? I'm not really a veal eater, anyway

$400 is, I agree, too much to spend on a steak. But there are at least 3 restaurants in Bangkok that make a good living doing just that. If you spend much time in Tokyo, and go to even the middle level traditional Teppanyaki Restaurants, you'll see that S400 buys you only the bottom-level selection. So clearly, around the Globe, there are many that do regularly consume $400 meals. I'm not one of them, but have done so a few times.

Nereus, you are spot on!

Have a nice day all

A cow is a cow, irrespective of how many birthdays its had. :neener:

All I know is, even if I was bloody Bill Gates I wouldn't be willing to pay $400 US for a steak. In fact, even though meat accounts for about 80% of my diet, I wouldn't even pay $50 US for a steak.

Well, if you take the sperm of a bull and use it to fertilize the egg of a cow, you most definitely end up with another cow. :neener:

And yes, I know veal is not beef, hence the reason I used the words, "Veal is BETTER THAN beef. :neener:

Talking of veal, does anyone know if they sell it anywhere in Hua-Hin?

I think the more likely scenario is $10 steaks being sold for $400 (and people daft enough to pay the money). I don't think there is any such thing as a $400 steak.

About a quarter of Thais have intestinal parasites and sometimes over 40% in rural areas so it's worth being a bit careful. I've tried most foods in Issan but I won't eat undercooked meat.

"Our result, 26.4% infection, is lower than previous reports from remote areas in Thailand which do not have a control program for intestinal parasites (34%-46%) (Triteeraprapab et al, 1997; 1998). A health intervention program for intestinal parasitic infection control in remote areas is still necessary.
The 26.4% intestinal parasite infections in our study is similar to the national average of 23% in the national epidemiological survey of 2001"
