Mixed up upper winds causing some confusion. Looks like some rain coming in Bangkok, and southerly winds in Hua Hin may result in some showers. It at least should drop the temperature a bit. Thunder storms likely in the North.

We've been having thunderstorms in the east since 0700. Cleaning the air and making growing things green again. :D

Had some heavy rain over the last couple of hours.

I'd like to apologise for this sudden weather. Obviously my fault. Had both cars at the carwash yesterday afternoon and was doing a major watering of the garden/lawns this morning!!!! Plus the wife had just hung out her washing.

You will have to learn to trust the weather forecast - I saw it was thunderstorms over Hua HIn and played golf. Left the umbrella in the car boot and got the wettest I have ever been in clothes

Pattaya was and perhaps still is underwater. Rain all around me but not a drop on our neighborhood further east. It's one of those weather systems that stops on a straight line, usually at a street intersection!  Photos at link.

Bangkok boils as mercury soars in 35 provinces

The mercury rose to 40 degrees Celsius in Bangkok on Thursday while 35 provinces in upper Thailand also experienced hot to very hot spells amid risk of brewing summer storms.

The Thai Meteorological Department warned residents to avoid outdoor activities and beware of gusty winds by staying away from big trees, unsecured buildings, and billboards.

The department pointed to the hot low pressure cell covering upper Thailand and the southerly and southeasterly winds prevailing over the North, the Northeast, the Central, the East, and the South regions throughout this week.

It said the upper regions would suffer hot to very hot weather. Greater Bangkok saw temperatures in the range of 37-40 degrees Celsius, the North was at 39-43, the Northeast at 37-41, the Central at 37-42 and the East at 34-39. Outbreaks of thundershowers with gusty winds were forecast for the lower North, the Northeast, the Central and the East. In the South, where the maximum temperature is 33-37 degrees Celsius, there will likely be isolated thundershowers, the department added.

What amazes me is that here in our local area just outside Hua Hin, the weather app was showing an actual temp of 35c a couple of hours ago but it also shows the “feels like” temp which showed a massive 48c - no wonder I feel like I’m about to melt!!

Not sure where they are getting southerly winds from, as least not at the surface. A big high pressure area over the Punjab is resulting in hot north / north westerly wind into Thailand. And for the east the flow is over Vietnam and Cambodia.

It is stifling at the moment in Bangkok.

It's extremely oppressive where I am. No desire or energy to do anything but sit in the cool house and watch the electric meter spin around. :banghead: Good to mention as no one else has....be careful of all street food bought outside these hot days, and even food that has been in an outdoor refrigerator as they are struggling to keep temperature.

Thailand’s summer will continue to be hotter than the same period last year, according to the Meteorological Department.

“It will be about one or two degrees Celsius hotter,” the department’s director-general Phuwieng Prakhammintara said onFriday.

The mercury is expected to soar past 42 degrees Celsius in seven provinces, namely Mae Hong Son, Lampang, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Nakhon Sawan and Kanchanaburi.

On Thursday, Lampang’s Thoen district was the hottest place in the country, with the mercury hitting to 44.2 degrees Celsius.

This was the highest temperature in the history of the northern province, which previously had recorded a top reading of 43.8 degrees Celsius.

The temperature has not yet broken the country’s record for hottest day, which was recorded at 44.6 degrees Celsius in Mae Hong Son province on April 28, 2016.

Phuwieng said that the sun would be perpendicular to and at the shortest distance from Bangkok on April 27, raising the possibility that it would be the hottest day of the year.

“But the forecast suggests it will rain between April 25 and 27 and that may help reduce the heat,” he said.

Last year it was hot, but we seemed blessed with cloudy skies and showers every few days throughout April and May before the monsoon actually started. Not this year it appears. :( :sun:

Heat to cook up storms, forecast says
Freak weather likely across country
Published: 20/04/2019 at 07:00 AM
Newspaper section: News https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... ecast-says

The country will be in the grip of sweltering heat on Saturday with the mercury expected to hit a scorching 44C in the North, according to the weather bureau.

As a result, the Meteorological Department is warning people to stay indoors, particularly the elderly and those prone to heatstroke.

The department said the heat could trigger gusty winds in many areas and freak storms. People should avoid standing under large trees and billboards which are not structurally secure.

The North is predicted to be hit hardest by the heat with temperatures hovering between 39-44C. There is a 10% chance of rain and strong winds in parts of Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Uttaradit, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit Phitsanulok and Phetchabun.

The Northeast is also likely to experience highs of between 39-40C, as is the Central Plains provinces, where the temperature could rise to 42C in some localities.

In the East and the South, the maximum temperatures are forecast to be between 37-40C, according to the department.

Bangkok is also in for baking hot weather fuelled by highs of 37-40C.

In Lampang yesterday, the authorities were handing out new corrugated zinc sheets for the repair of house roofs torn off by a freak storm which ravaged wide areas of tambon Mae Phrik, in Mae Phrik district yesterday.

More than 50 houses were affected. Some also sustained damage from hailstones, according to the local disaster mitigation office.

In Phaisali district of Nakhon Sawan, heavy rain and hailstones -- some as big as marbles -- pounded houses for hours.

Phayao Boonkham, of Ban Mai Kradonepom in Phaisali, said she and her family fled their home when it was battered by hail and had the roof blown off.

In the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, shops and houses were damaged and vehicles hit by falling trees when strong winds and heavy rain pummeled Phimai municipality.

Residents and local officials could be seen hard at work yesterday morning cleaning up streets and making repairs to damaged buildings.

Wind and rain pounded the municipality's evening markets during peak time, striking suddenly when residents were shopping around 6.30pm.

Phimai district chief Lertphan Sinbanlengsanoi and mayor Danai Tangjurdja said at least 100 houses and shops were damaged. Some big trees around Phimai Historical Park fell on parked vehicles and shops in the area. The park was not damaged, and there were no reports of injuries.

This one is an update on the heatwave, personal health in this heat, and how an overheated cell phone can blow a hole in your windshield similar to the blast from a 12 bore. Photos and story at link.
