Rock for me! How I miss Rock now no longer in London. I'm visiting a mate in town soon and will pay a visit to my old chippie for Rock 'n chips (no mushy peas!)

This introduces an entire new aspect...at least for me. "Rock" I assume means rock cod. Is there any other type of cod and guesses what kind of cod it is we get at Foodland and the like over here? To my memory the tag just say "cod" and not the type. Cod other than rock just as good concerning Fish & Chips? Pete

"Rock" is rock salmon - dogfish. (If I remember correctly).

That's correct Lomu, or its variants, basically a member of the shark family - not Cod Pete.

40-50 years ago it was a cheaper alternative to cod and from what I remember it tasted ok but most F&C'S shops stopped selling it and just offered Haddock as an alternative to Cod.

I'm really wondering if what is labeled "cod" in the Thai stores actually is cod? There are no regs here concerning truth in labeling to my knowledge.

FLASH....I just pulled a package from the freezer and it says "Pacific Cod Loin, Fish (Pack). (Imported) 399 Baht per kilo. Are there Cod in the Pacific? Pete

Hi Pete

On this side of the pacific we have cod, but a few types. Rock cod is great while tommy cod is terrible, so they could be correct but a different quality

But.....is the rock cod you refer to really cod or the same that Caller, Lomu and Dannie are talking about above...the mystery continues. :D Pete

Skate and chips was my favourite, the wing done in batter was the best part, but the body was sold too.
Now, most supermarkets in the UK don't sell it as skate, as it is an endangered species ! But now ray wings are appearing in the fish counters, which looks and tastes the same.
When I was in Makro, which has an excellent wet fish display, they had two very large ray fish on the counter. They told my Thai wife that they would prepare them for cooking, but I had to buy the whole fish! which was probably enough to feed a family. Wonder if this would cook well in batter and taste the same as skate? Might chance my arm, buy it prepared and ask the new ' chippy' if he would cook it for me.

But you cannot tell by the label on the packet, unless maybe it is in a imported vacuum pack. On the fish display in BigC that I use in Bangkok there is a prepared fish labeled "Crap"!
It is a fish, not Crab, and actually correct, as it IS "Crap"!

As said it has to be cod for me as there is no substitute, we sometimes buy imported cod in villa and batter it ourselves.

But lately I have been buying Harry Ramsdens cod in batter that they sell in villa, strangely I have noticed its made by birds eye now.

The other thing I miss is birds eye cod fish fingers, I have noticed that most fish fingers in the uk are now labelled as Hoki. What the hell is hoki????.

I am not really an avid fish eater but I do also love salmon, as long as its tinned.

Hoki is a deep-sea species that is caught in NZ waters, also off the bottom of Australia, and off the coasts of South America. It has white, flaky flesh. Another name is Blue Grenadier.
It is exported all over the world. I would say that it is now the mainstay of the NZ fishing indutry.

Thanks for that alleycat.

So a country surrounded by water is reduced to taking fish from bigger sheep farmers than the Welsh.

The sooner the uk leaves the Eu the better, those spanish gits have had all our young cod.

Not keen on the frogs either. :guns:

Rock salmon is still widely available in London's chippies. It was always primarily a 'London' fish. I miss the London chippies with the range of fish usually available, out of town its mainly just cod or haddock.

TTM, I'm a bit of a fish finger butty man. You tend to pay extra for cod fish fingers, pretty much all brands I see use Pollock now. I have 2 packs from Birds eye in my freezer and they both use 'Alaskan pollock' and that surprised me, as Pollock is, I believe, widely available around the UK. I caught some off the scillies once!

As for Harry Ramsdens, it went downhill when bought out and becoming a 'chain' outlet.
