Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
I just noticed this article from two weeks ago. It doesn't sound groundbreaking or exciting to me at all from Volvo. A heavy hauler capable of a 600 km (373 mile) range between charges? Perhaps barely capable of long hauls in Europe and the UK, but nonsense concerning North America. They won't sell one except perhaps for local work within a city or State.
The long haul people do 1,000 miles per day and sometimes more, and they won't want to stop for recharging. I personally used to do 700 miles per day cross country in a personal vehicle before my eyeballs just about fell out, but those truckers are a different breed.

GOTHENBURG - Sweden's Volvo will launch a long-range variant of its FH Electric truck, capable of covering up to 600 kilometres (373 miles) on a single charge, its truckmaking arm said on Tuesday.
The new model, expected to hit the market in the second half of 2025, caters to customers requiring longer hauls by maximising battery space while improving the truck's software.................

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
^I've just looked this up and an articulated truck, or semi-trailer, averages somewhere between 45,000 and 60,000 miles a year in the US. That gives you a daily mileage within the range of that truck.
Obviously some do way more but many are being used for more local journeys.
I've noticed in Europe that nearly all new smaller commercial vehicles are now electric, the sort of vans and trucks that do deliveries.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Agree with what you're saying PeteC and Range/Infrastructure have always been the sticking points for EVs (especially in the UK). That said though, I guess in this instance there is the argument regarding limits for HGV Drivers in the UK/EU - in particular the required resting periods, time to re-charge in more ways than one
This from a quick Google Search: -
In the UK, the daily driving limit for HGV drivers is nine hours, but it can be extended to 10 hours twice a week. Other rules include: -
* Weekly limit: HGV drivers cannot drive more than 56 hours per week
* Fortnightly limit: HGV drivers cannot drive more than 90 hours in any two consecutive weeks
* Break requirements: HGV drivers must take a 45-minute break after driving for 4.5 hours
* Rest periods: HGV drivers must get at least 11 hours of rest between working days
* Weekly rest period: HGV drivers must get a regular weekly rest period of 45 hours
* Split breaks: HGV drivers can take a 45-minute break in two sections, with the first section being at least 15 minutes and the second at least 30 minutes
HGV driving hours in the UK are based on EU driving hour laws.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
For the UK, a range of approximately 370 miles would be sufficient for most organisations to get from A to B, the challenge will be to ensure it can recharge it’s batteries in time for a B to A return journey!!
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
But what’s the point?
A standard size diesel Transit has a range of 900km. When it’s done 400,000km its range will be 900km. When it’s below zero Celsius its range will be 900km. Which makes EV vans a nonsense.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Plenty of arguments both pro and con regardless of where you are based. Despite the completely inept Car Hating Government and Councils in the UK, there is zero benefit to me for changing my now 11 year old diesel for an EV. A decision going for the EV, likely worse for the environment anyway.
I've just done a long weekend away with the LHG and my dear old Mam, where I've put in 350 miles+ with just over half a tank of fuel. I passed countless stations certainly no further apart than +/- 15 miles where I could have refuelled if necessary - I didn't see too many "Charging Stations". EVs were not going to be a choice for me, Hybrids quite possibly - but quite frankly I'm loving my (very decent) "Dirty Diesel" and it will go on for years to come - quite possibly a damn sight longer than me!

A Tesla Semi electric truck traveled over 1,000 miles in a single day in a real-world test for a new independent study.
https://electrek.co/2023/09/29/tesla-se ... ingle-day/
The North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) has been conducting a study as part of its new Run on Less program to test several electric trucks in real-world conditions and release the data in real time.
There are three new Tesla Semi trucks in the program this year, and we reported on the first data coming earlier this month.
Now, the 18-day study has concluded, and on the second to last day, the Tesla Semi #3 managed to travel a record 1,076 miles in a single day.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
The thing is that Governments and Environmentalists around the world have decided that the world cannot continue to pollute our atmospheres as they have done for the past 100+ years, so like it or not EV’s (and possibly other forms of non-polluting fuels) are the future.2/cb wrote:But what’s the point?

Current range and performance is considerably better than it was 10 years ago and the indications are that the step change over the next 10 years will be much greater so I’m sure that 1000+ miles and quick charging will soon be the norm!!

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
This is a somewhat unique EV that will only appeal to a relatively small audience, but it seems incredible for its specific market.

^And in a commercial environment, potentially something like 70% lower fuel costs which is enough to get your accountants very excited.

I didn't ask how much it costs but here is a 900hp Lotus electric SUV:

Looks like the lotus Eletre R which in the UK ranges between £121-126k and provides performance of 165 mph and 0-60 in 3.1 seconds, so seriously fast.STEVE G wrote:I didn't ask how much it costs but here is a 900hp Lotus electric SUV:

Unless money was no object, it definitely wouldn’t be on any of my shortlists, but then again I have no idea what I’d buy in the £100k+ category - if I win the lottery I’ll start lookingpharvey wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 11:52 pmAhh, LOTUS - Lots Of Trouble Usually SeriousDannie Boy wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 11:38 pmLooks like the lotus Eletre R which in the UK ranges between £121-126k and provides performance of 165 mph and 0-60 in 3.1 seconds, so seriously fast.STEVE G wrote:I didn't ask how much it costs but here is a 900hp Lotus electric SUV:

And just look what ICE cars you could buy second hand for a fraction of the cost of this or new EVs...
