Sorry bro, wrong company, - even if I did I doubt in a million years that any of Hua Hin's golf courses would give a rats arse about expats and discounts.

One of the easiest ways to find out current prices is simply to call the course. OK there are farang and Thai prices as well as high and low season, but get a Thai person to call and hopefully receive some proper information. When you turn up as a farang the cost might change though. This site looks reasonable:

BTW - I stood on the 9th tee at Dolphin Bay this afternoon needing a par 4 for a 39 (5 over par). Creamed the drive, but pulled the 3 iron into a greenside bunker. Ended up with a 7!!!!! One of these days I'll break 40 on that course - 9 holes, par 34. :cuss: :cuss:

When he next comes to visit his in-laws I woder whether it will be possible for him to give a master class at Dolphin Bay for some of our scribes?

Incidentally Australia has managed to get him to visit there later this year!

I reckon even Tiger would struggle putting on those greens down at DB!

Here's another for all you golfers (from a newbie at the sport): what is the best way to take what you've learnt and achieved at the range to the course?

I often find I (or the pro) can correct things easier and I hit more consistently at the range but when I get on a course it all goes for a ball of shit and its not easy to fix.

Having a tray of balls to hit helps as opposed to only one shot out there!

Advice on a golf ball appreciated ...

Buks,
I think so much of it is confidence and having "no fear" of a course. When I used to play a lot as a kid, we'd hit around 100 balls off a practice fairway, not a mat, before we even went out to play. We knew the course backwards and whilst we always were aware of our score, we never marked a card except for competitions
I think you're doing the right thing now and not marking yourself. So, you get a 7 on the first, so what? There are another eight holes to get some bogies and maybe a par or two (as you know you can do).
Also, I think it's important to practice as close to playing as possible. When I used to play regularly over here, I'd always try to get to the range the day before playing. I could experiment there with my grip, address position etc and try and take two things maximum to think about into the golf the next day.
I've never seen much point in practicing on a Tuesday and playing on a Friday. I'd have forgotten the feel of everything by then. Your idea of maybe practicing one evening before a days golf is the way to go I reckon.
I'm sure there will be more experienced golfers who can put their tuppence worth into your debate.

I agree with you Lomu,

If I want to be a decent golfer I have to practice every day, but if I can't do that, I've found it better to practice in the afternoon before I'm going out to play the next morning.

Many go to the course early and hit a hundred or so balls before play. That works for some (mostly pros and the more fit of us) but I find that if I do that, especially here, I'm hot, sweaty, and tired before I even start the round. In an environment such as this I would practice the day before and hit no more that a dozen shots immediately before a round to loosen up (if any at all).

I also agree that you shouldn't count your strokes in the beginning, especially if you are playing on courses like DB or the military course in Pranburi. Nearly every lie is bad and the greens are horrible... it will only depress you and is not a true indication of your level of play. For that you need to play a course with green mowed turf and smooth true greens. Unfortunately, I can't afford those here.

Speaking of which, I heard that Palm Hills has a twilight (after 3 p.m.) rate of 950 baht for green fee and caddy. That is reasonable and I don't think the course is very busy on weekdays during that time so a group could probably finish before dark.

What other courses have twilight promotions and what are they? Anyone?

Yeah - one thing I don't like about our 'home' course at DB is the lack of driving range - I go out there 'cold' and usually fcuk up straight off the first tee.

Banyan has a 1,200 after 3pm deal I think. Sadly I work during the week which cuts me out of all of these deals and joining a society since they play on weekdays only.

Not only do I have to pay extra if I want to play at the weekend but I have to fork out for mrs B also who then proceeds to beat me.

Tennis anyone?

Both what Lomu and HHFsay is correct , when your playing somewhere like DB you should be taking preferred lies everywhere and give yourself the best opportunity to hit decent shots - score card.... forget it. Judge your game on how many solid shots you hit, and play against your partner not yourself and a score, Buksi- if u play Lomu he should give you maybe a shot a hole, this way you will think about keeping up with him - not par.

Practise before play? - i rarely hit balls before i play....why, well if i hit it badly then i take bad feel to the course - if i hit it well then i would have anyway on the first! I feel taking an open mind to the course is a great way to go. Getting loose is the most important thing to do before play take a look at some of the top pros websites and u can find the correct stretches to do. Hitting a few putts is ok, just make sure you get 'em!!! If after a few holes its just not feeling good, take 2 beer changs and drink em as fast as you can - then quite simply it will be a laugh anyway!

happy hitting guys!
