Re: Getting rid of an unwanted start up page

Post by hhfarang »

My (free) Avast virus software gives me a pop-up every now and then to say someone was trying to change my home page and the action was blocked. It this gives me the option to continue the blocking or let it happen. You need better anti-virus software or you need to set up the AV options better. Most AV programs have the option to block unauthorized home page changes.

Check the add-ons and delete anything dodgy.

Delete the desktop shortcut to the browser, this can often get hijacked.

Uninstall anything by Baidu.

If those two dont work download and run this: http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-Hi ... 27353.html

And especially get rid of any non-original toolbars in your web browsers! They make their income by either spying on your Internet habits and selling that information or showing you advertising either as pop ups or by replacing original advertising in the web pages you visits. And often they do both...

I tried all the suggestions given my our kind forum members but hao123 refused to leave me alone.

I then deleted my Chrome desktop short cut, and at last I am free. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

OPERATING SYSTEM VALIDITY

How can one check a computer has a valid operating system and whether updates and patches can be applied please?

I recently purchased a new HP Pavilion 20 from the shopping Mall which came with Windows 8.1 Pro N loaded and operational and as advised before purchasing I checked out all the specifications when powered up

Anyone else having problems streaming live international TV. I stream a live news broadcast every morning for a couple of hours while I am scanning the forum and doing other internet stuff. It used to work well, but lately the stream stops every 10 t0 20 seconds with that little spinning wheel in the middle of the video while it buffers or catches up. It is very annoying and I miss at least half of the broadcast. I have a constant monitor of CPU and RAM running and the CPU usage never gets above 7% and Ram never above 30% so I don't think it is resources on my machine.

I've noticed this happening and becoming worse ever since the beginning of high season. I have the 3BB 800+ baht package (not the cheapest) and I'm thinking the problem is international bandwidth with so many more people in Thailand using it at this time. Does 3BB, like the phone companies, go through Cat Telecom for international internet sites?

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Every Thai ISP goes through CAT. Using TOT I can stream ok using the ExpatTV system but YouTube is diabolical.

Both my Expat TV and 365 Sport work 'almost' perfectly.

Just a thought, but are you using Avast? If you are, try disabling it for 10 minutes to see if it makes any difference. I've had to uninstall it for several friends, and I disable mine before using the laptop to watch TV.

Thanks BB, I do use Avast. I'll try that but I don't like to be naked out there on the net. Is there another free antivirus program that's as good and doesn't hog resources. I actually changed to Avast from AVG two or three years ago because AVG was hogging resources and Avast was supposed to be "lighter".

AVG is the only one I know of, although I'm sure there are others.

AVG is what I used to replace Avast on friend's machines, and TV now works fine for them.

When I disable my Avast, I only use Expat TV or 365 Sport, both of which I trust.

When I went to Khun Don in Soi 51 a few months ago to clean up my computer ( at which he is excellent) he uninstalled any antivirus I had eg AVG and installed BAIDU ANTIVIRUS, it is also free.

I have had no real problems except for getting odd things when downloading from Pirate Bay
