In my experience, the biggest problem with Thai workers working for Ferang employers with small business's is the Ferang's weakness and inability to realize the culture of Thai people is that of self sufficiency. Thai people are encouraged from an early age to set up their own wee business and if they decide to be employed by someone else rather than work for themselves, the employer should have credibility, like a bank, hospital, school or hotel. A small business needs to offer more than just a nominal 10,000 THB per month, otherwise it's seen by the Thai employee as blatant exploitation. Give a Thai person a good salary, with a career path, training and above all respect - you will be surprised and amazed by the quality of worker who will work for you. Lack of respect coupled with poor wages and no career path will get you what you deserve.

Well I accept you're talking about LOS, but in many places a fair days pay for a fair days work is deemed a reasonable return. I had no idea that so many Thais were so career orientated. Are so many businesses, Thai or otherwise, always able to offer a career path?

Is 10k a month such a poor salary in Hua Hin or LOS in general?

My wife was offered a job in Bangkok based on her qualifications, starting was 7500 rising to about 12,000. A room the size of a shoebox with a loo would have cost her about 1200pm.

And your comments still don't explain the scenarios described by others.

Nice to see you back though! :thumb:

By the by, if anyone in the future is seeking to employ a hardworking, industrious, innovative Thai, computer literic-ish, currently at EFL intermediate level, but seeking to have secured her "first certificate" by March 08, please let me know, it may have a bearing on where we settle in LOS!!! :D

Is anyone else here having to try and assist on such things as verbs? What the hell is past continuous in any case? Was this something I was ever taught? I got O level English, so I guess so? But it comes to something when I am unable to assist any further at "intermediate level"!! :guns: :cuss:

You use the past continuous too many times each day to even count!
Its used for a continuing action that happened in the past at any time up to now.
I was eating dinner
past=was eating= continuous form (action taking place over time)

Usually used when talking about two occurrences
eg. I was eating dinner (before now, action in progress)
when the phone rang (rang= simple past for an action completed in the past).

Its also referred to as past progressive.
Formation: simple past of first verb + -ing form (present participle) of second verb.
Clear as mud, innit? :?
