True BG,
Profits are up heaven knows what in the UK and now eventually they're thinking about taking the USA/Wallmart on. They're serious.
There's nowhere for them to expand to in the UK. They control 30%+ of everything we eat and drink. If Tesco dosn't like it, a product won't happen. The manufacturers have no negotiating power any more. "Do you want your product in our stores?" "Well here are the terms, non negotiable". "Up to you". And meanwhile Tesco gets their own label that's almost as good as the "real thing".
I promise you the only companies that can stand up to Tesco are
Nestle - the biggest food and drink company in the world (and they let go of so many brands and eventually took over Rowntrees)
Mars
Coca cola
Pepsi
Cadburys etc etc

And there will be others who are fiercley proud that they dont manufacture "Tesco Own Label".

The rest have bitten the dust already, or merged to protect themselves years ago. You can invest loads in product development, but if you've got nowhere to sell it, it's pretty pointless.
Believe me, I worked in the industry, allbeit from a publishing point of view, for a good while.
At the end of the day, the decisions that the buyers make at Tesco will determine what we eat and drink. Simple as that.

I agree with Johnny and have said it before, if have you have to check prices of drink or food when you are on holidays, then you cannot afford to be there.

I know that the locals who live there all the time have a different slant on things and can readily appreciate that.

To me coming to HH (ot anywhere in Thailand) and getting bottles of small Heininkin for around 3 00 to 3.50 Aussie Dollars is still half price to what we pay here, singa and chang is even better value.

I do take advantage of the large bottles when they are available, and a 55baht large bottle from the supermarket is still top of my list.

When i went to Phuket we stayed for two days at a place called the Chedi, and had it own private beach. There was a small fishing village at the end of the beach and a couple of the villagers came along the beach selling beers.

This hotel from the beach is all seriously up hill, and the villagers that sold the beer went to the trouble of putting ice is a plastic bag and then putting the beer in the plastic bag top keep cool.

Those people knew exactly what the hotel sold beer in the bar and from the mini bar for and had their prices set accordingly, and provided the only service that this wonderful hotel did not (bar service on the beach at reasonable prices).

It was very sad to hear that when the Tsunami went through Phuket that a lot of the villiagers I am talking about died, but they will always be in my memory remembering the time that I was there.

Also Ozuncle, ho do you go with charging corkage if you are a licenced place, and also supplying free water to patrons, who do not want to drink.

I saw a lot of places are now charging huge corkage charges to try and get people away from BYO in licenced placee. Personally

I do not blame them, you also have my sympathy with the young crowds that come in mob handed and then order a couple of coffees and then demand free bottles of water.

There are places in the inner citty now that just flatly refuse to do it because those people are taking up seats from people who want to spend money to eat there.
By the way Ozuncle, pm me with the address of your resteraunt and if you are close will pop down sometime and have a feed.

If we are asking about bars then we should compare like with like.
For the most part, bars sell beer.
Guesthouses sell rooms, food and often other services like tour bookings, moto rental etc etc. Numerous revenue points there.
There's cheap beer in HH.
Its at the 7-11 and you can drink it in your room and avoid tips and other "itrritants" like service.
THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS BAR AND THE BARS 3 MINS WALKAWAY IS THEY DONT SELL HOOKERS.

Why can they sell Chang at 35 baht and the other bars who sell hookers SELL THE SAME BEER FOR OVER TWICE THE PRICE?

This bar is in the road adjascent the main bar area, I would assume it has the same type of rent and overheads.

There is one simple answer Bearhug, if u only want to pay 35baht for your beer spend all your time there and do not venture to anywhere where you have to pay extra, please do so.

That way no one else will have to listen to you moan and whine about the beer prices in any of the other bars in town.

You will probably end up a right billy no mates, but hey u sound like that already, and everyone else will be having a ball

In reply to the original post on this topic, most bars HAVE to charge
50/60b for a Chang and 70b(+) for lager-beer to stay in the game.
Every year these bars face increases in rent, key-money etc.

Its up to you....if you wanna drink cheap beer on the steps of a 7/11
then bring a cushion out with you, but remember to keep an emptybottle
to p**s in ...when the bar opposite refuses to let you use their toilet!!

No, they only sleep there.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

I think rent is the world you were looking for. Ever stopped to think why the place has peeling paint, faded flags and a general look of clean me.

See my post's, its a bar the same as all bars in Hua hin, its 3 mins walk from Crawford's so probably the same rent and overheads as the majority of bars, they have a Pool table, serve food etc but serve Chang for 35 baht.

Why look, its just around the corner from your bar, yes you would be saving a dollar for every beer Chang you buy at the All Nation's.
Most bars rent bike's some are selling house's some are selling Golf Tour's.
Service, they have the same service as all bars and still offer beer Chang for 35 baht..

Walk down Bintabaht from the Hilton during daylight hour's, take a look at every bar on the left hand side down to 7/11 and tell me the last time one of these bars was decorated.

All Nation's Bar 35 baht for a Chang, thats value or is it a case of the other ripping everyone off???????

I think bottled beer is very expensive in bars i can get 3 bottles of large chang for 100 bhat at my local shop so why do the bars have to be so greedy charging what they do for a small bottle.

When or where has it ever been any different?
Bars charge more for a beer than an off license.
Last time I checked it was also cheaper to buy food at a supermarket than at a restaurant.

Is the football on tonight in your local shop?

Are the seats comfortable?
