You are right about the king.
It was King George II of England who gave his name to the state of Georgia.
What happened?
The world fell apart.
Actually, the Brits did not exploit to the utmost their empire, in contrast to other European nations who did nothing else than cash in on their colonies.

Maybe we decided that we had enough problems to contend with in the motherland & we should sort those out; rather than going in & treading on everyone's toes, rewriting human rights laws & generally being the world's policemen. Unlike a modern superpower who is presently doing all of those things under their esteemed commander-in-chief. And has plenty of problems to deal with at home.

OK, OK. That was very tongue in cheek - I'm quite aware what British colonialism was like for the natives, and despite what some Americans think, they certainly didn't suffer the worst of it! Norseman is right, though, sadly some of our European neighbours were even worse than us. :(

Thailand house prices

Post by appleman_thai »

I've been back in Ireland for over a month now and there is big talk about an impending property crash!

It seems to me that a lot of the foreigners who have bought in THailand have done so based on the equity they have built up in their houses back in the Western World!

If these markets crash or fall significantly then can we see an impact on the Thai market?

I think so!

Due to the lack of local finance available in Thailand I think it will be hard to recover if the foreigners stop throwing their cash in here!

That may have already started anyway!

THe property markets are just cycles anyway and the key is to figure out where in the cycle we are! Buy low, sell high!

FOr me, I think THailand is on the medium/high end and Ireland is on the top end(on the way down!!)

Americans dont make very good colonialists.

Post by vincent chang »

The Americans colonized the Kingdom of Hawaii, by force of arms , back in 1898, but they eventually made it the 50th state in 1960. They also took the philippines at about the same time, but look at the philippines now. Yes, the Belgians were pretty bad with their colony in africa, The Americans will finish what they are doing in the middle east, and then go home. they dont stick around. You would think there would be more americans here in south east asia, after the vietnam war, but no, they just go back home. I guess because Europe is so crowded and expensive, people need to go somewhere else that is more affordable.

Property prices in Thailand as a whole are still very cheap compared with Europe, it’s only in Bangkok and holiday resorts like Hua Hin that you pay any amount of money. In rural parts of Thailand you can still buy land for almost nothing (ownership issues aside).

Vincent what exactly do you think the Americans are doing in the middle east? Finish what? The president of the USA is so thick he has no idea what he is doing from day to day never mind on foreign policy strategy. They even found a IQ test result he done prior to dropping out of college and he scored 77, that’s in the bottom intelligence bracket in the world, not having a go at your country but lets face it Bush is one dumb fxxker

But to answer your question what the Americans are doing in the Middle East: Pumping arms, explosives and money into Israel I guess.
