Health and wellness digital devices

Post by wenshidi »

Does anybody have any experience with these devices that they can share?

As the tech continues to improve, I am interested in everything from fitbits and smart watches to full EEG monitors as advanced brain interfaces.

Is it best to start with a ring monitor?

As well as personal measurement devices, is Hua Hin a good place to get more professional testing done? I recently read that an exome test has dropped to less to 200 bucks in the US these days. Is is possible to get things like DNA tests, x rays and MRIs at reasonable costs in HH, now that we have ChatGPT and commander Shapeiro to help out the analysis?

What will people pay for a smart watch? Someone here complained about Amazfit prices being too high last year and recommended the Redmi Watch 4. My well-specced Amazfit Active Black was 4300 Baht in May last year and it's 4,500 now. The Redmi model is under 1500 Baht in black (black is always more, go figure) but I have no idea about the apps it has installed. Compared to the silly prices of others like Google and Garmin they are both a steal anyway.

I don't need GPS as I always carry a smartphone which has mobile data and internet, but I like a good range of healthchecks in a worn item. I buy things that are mid price range, balancing price against the spec of the item and reliability. Is cheapest better in an item that you want to use for a long time? I don't believe so.

What did you/would you pay?

The two that I bought last year for the Mrs and I were just over 2,000 baht each, both still working well and have GPS for running and hiking and plenty of apps/modes. Don't need a 10k Garmin or Apple to tell me I need more exercise!

Not sure about health testing, BK Hospital has packages but they ain't cheap.

I walked towards the Garmin stand in Market Village a few days ago. The first model I saw was 20,000 Baht; I turned around!

The mrs got the Amazfit Bip 5, and I got the Mi Band 8 Pro. There are probably newer models for the same price now.

My wife and I have been using Apple Watches since they first came out. Yes, they are horribly expensive, but they fit in well with the Apple Fan-Boy infrastructure. I can't compare with other workout/health devices because I haven't used others. At this point I'm so used to having all that power on my wrist that I'd probably have trouble trying to do without it. I use mine every single day for workouts and health reminders. It correctly diagnosed my atrial fibrillation and provided multiple ECGs for which I and the cardiologist were grateful.

For my workouts I use a free app called WorkOutDoors. Attached is a screenshot of a workout summary; a 79K cycling workout in Cha Am.

I love that ride. Good roads with bike paths or wide shoulders. Little traffic. Beautiful scenery. A few hours well spent. At age 75 I gotta keep moving.

Puts me to shame - I probably do close to 10km most mornings and that takes about 30 minutes, so a similar kph as you, but no way could I manage almost 80 km!!

My daily workout is, like yours, about 10K in 30 minutes. Once a week I do a longer one; usually 35K or so, but sometimes a bit longer.
