What do you look for in a bar
I know Buk's doing a great job with the online jukie's but I'd like to be able to walk into a bar in HH that's playing some cool alternative sounds now and again. I know this goes against the grain but some of the music in the bars is just so damn cheesy and mainstream it really does my lugs in.
I know mainstream cheese is the norm for Thailand and, from what I can make out, it gets a 99% approval rating from one and all. Surely there must be someone else who'd like to hear something a bit more riveting though.
The nearest you get to anything out the leftfield is The Doors....not that I'm complaining when they're playing like.
Saying that, it is getting better. When I first came over I heard Hotel California so often I never wanted to hear it again. Now I hardly ever hear it but when I do, I kinda chuckle and it takes me back to that first trip.
Doubt there'll be many that know where I'm coming from but that's my two satangs.

I'd go along with you on that, Heebio.
When I had my bar here 7 years ago - pre the jukebox era - I brought quite a bit of my music from the UK over. As a result, a fair bit of The Happy Mondays, Stone Roses and The Charlatans were blasting out most nights. I was surprised at how many people it attracted "Blimey, mate. I've not heard any of that being played before in HH, or anywhere else in Thailand for that matter".
The above does not take into account the droves of customers I scared off. They just wanted Hotel California. That's why the jukebox idea was so good.

Is Jazz only found during the 3-day Jazz festival?
I normally look for a place where it's reasonably quiet and the crowd looks friendly enough. The bar counter (if there is one) is usually the best place to be. Loud, alcohol fueled snooker rowdiness and groping couples turn me off.
Any place I find pleasant conversation is where I'll stop for a beer or three. Oh, and of course, flirting with the girls, too.

Totally with Heebio on the music issue, one of the major problems is that lots of bar owners let the staff look afterthe music, so even a good music library is often wasted. I have got some great music on my jukebox that is rarely played, and if im in the bar, as the soul monsta will tesitfy i listen to what i like! No ones perfect! If i pass a bar playing something good (never in HH) its a certain draw for me. Check out the post on the food section that links to live music.

Easy you chuck a load of chemicals (mostly monosaccharides, disaccharides, trisaccharides and acids) into a gigantic vat of water (H2O with some residual metalic compounds) and pump Carbon Dioxide (CO2) through it.lomuamart wrote:
How do you make lemonade?
Then force ot into a plastic bottle and sell it to the unsuspecting public for an extortionate price which amounts to about 10,000 times the cost of it's manufacture. Stick a label that says Schweppes or Sprite on it and you can make even more money.

Sprite ain't lemonade Khun Guru. Is there anywhere in town that does the proper stuff? I'm in town in a couple of weeks and plan on downing the odd voddie or two, it'd be nice to get a decent mixer with it for a change.Guess wrote:Stick a label that says Schweppes or Sprite on it and you can make even more money.

Sorry Heeb,
I was being factious. Real lemonade is impossible to get here. The main problem being as that, for some reaseon that has so far evaded me, is they do not grow lemons here.
The only product that I have seen here that has the name Lemon on it is Barardi Breezer.
Perhaps we could start up a home made limeade business.
Both Lemon and Lime are known as Manow here, even though no Thai person has ever seen a lemon.
When you can get yourself away from your cold environment please bring some of the stuff with you and I might be persuaded to chuck a couple of Vodkas in it for you.

It would appear we need to look for a bar that is allowed to be open!!!
